I have heard so much about The Rough Riders and their heroics that I was let down a little by this book. But as with most heros they are very humble when they talk about what they did, I think this is the case here. Roosevelt just simply reported what happened as it happened not realizing the impact it would have on his future and the heroics that they had accomplished.
