WE commence the present year with a new and an enlarged series of this Periodical. Our Readers may probably expect from us a few words by way of an address.

This Magazine, since its commencement in 1812, has undergone several important changes. From the year of its birth to 1830 it was a quarterly; from 1830 to 1840 it was a bimonthly; and from that period to the present, it has been a monthly Periodical, and now it will be presented to the Readers, without any addition to its price, in an enlarged, and, as we trust, in an improved form.

Its gradually increasing circulation, which last year amounted to thirteen thousand copies, may probably be some reliable indication of the gradual increase of those who feel an interest in the doctrines and truths it advocates.

But the changes which this Magazine has experienced are but little indeed, when compared with the changes which the mental horizon, especially in relation to Theology, has undergone since the date of its origin. Nearly every thing during the last forty-two years has experienced, not only in relation to the externals of our civil life, but also in relation to the internal modes of our thinking life, a renewing process to so great an extent, as to remind us of the Divine declaration,— Behold I make all things new," and that "new heavens and a new [Enl. Series.-No. 1, vol. i.]
