MR. PRESIDENT: Your committee on manufactures, to whom was referred a petition of 790 persons praying for protection against convict labor as in competition with business carried on by private enterprise, have had the same under consideration, and I am directed to report it back to the Senate with the recommendation that the prayer of the petition be not granted.

The Senate met pursuant to adjournment; President in the chair.

Roll called. The following gentlemen were present and answered to their names: Messrs. Blair, Brandley, Barker, Crichton, Edwards, Grimes, Judd, Martindale, McFarland, Moonlight,

Morrill, Murdock, O'Neil, Rogers, Schmidt, Simons, St. John, Topping, Wilson, V. P., and Winter. Quorum present.

Mr. Murdock moved that the further reading of the journals of yesterday be dispensed with, which motion prevailed.

Mr. V. P. Wilson offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That the state officers, together with the members of the legislature of Nebraska, are hereby invited to seats within the bar of the Senate.

Which was adopted.

Mr. Blair offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That when the Senate adjourn it be to meet on Monday, at 3 P. M.

Mr. McFarland moved that the resolution be laid upon the table, which motion prevailed.

Mr. Morrill offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That the Governor be requested to return to the Senate Senate bill No. 56, which motion prevailed.

The following message from the Governor was received and read:

The following message from the House of Representatives was received and read:

PRESIDENT: I am directed to inform the Senate that the House of Representatives has passed substitute for House bill No. 160, "An act to amend an act amendatory of and supplemental to an act approved February 29, 1872, entitled 'An act defining the boundaries of counties,' approved March 3, 1868." House joint resolution No. 4, "Making an appropriation to James M. Matheny," was read the first time.

Substitute for House bill No. 160, "An act to amend an act amendatory of and supplemental to an act approved February 29, 1872, entitled 'An act defining the boundaries of counties,' approved March 3, 1868," was read the first time.

House concurrent resolution No, 38, "Granting the use of the hall of the House of Representatives to the farmers of the state on Monday, March 26, 1873, which was laid over under the rules.

Mr. Murdock moved that the rules be suspended and bills just read the first time be read the second time and referred now, which motion prevailed, and House joint resolution No. 4, "Making an appropriation to James M. Matheny," was read the second time and referred to the committee of the whole Senate.

Substitute for House bill No. 160, "An act to amend an act amendatory of and supplemental to an act approved February 29, 1872, entitled 'An act defining the boundaries of counties,' approved March 3, 1868," was read the second time and referred to the committee on counties and county lines.

RESOLUTIONS CONSIDERED.

House concurrent resolution No. 34, "Concerning the Kaw Indian lands," was taken up for consideration.

The question being upon the adoption of the resolution, a vote was had and the resolution adopted.

Ordered that the Secretary inform the House thereof.
