GUYOT'S

GEOGRAPHICAL SERIES OF TEXT-BOOKS.

The Publishers take pleasure in announcing that the first two books of the series, which have been so long looked for, are now ready; viz:

No. I.

Primary; or, Introduction to the Study of Geography.

ONE QUARTO VOLUME, WITH OVER ONE HUNDRED ELEGANT ILLUSTRATIONS.

The object of this book is not so much to impart geographical knowledge as to prepare the way for its successful acquirement in the future. It is literally an " Introduction to the Study of Geography."

No. II.

Common School Geography.

IN ONE ROYAL QUARTO VOLUME, WITH NUMEROUS ILLUSTRATIONS.

CONTAINING

Twenty-three Maps, of which five are double-page maps, engraved in the highest style of the art, colored politically and physically, embracing

also Diagrams for the construction of maps

of each Continent.

This book embraces a minute and detailed study of each map; a full description of the general physical character of each continent; its vegetable and animal life; the races of men which inhabit it, and the states into which it is divided.

ALSO,

Teachers' Edition

OF THE

COMMON SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY.

EMBRACING

The "Common School Geography," together with a full exposition of the method of Geographical Teaching recommended by the author.

These books, both in regard to their general plan and in the selection of matter presented, differ essentially from every series of Geographical Text-Books in use, and we can but believe that all who examine them will find that the high expectations entertained with regard to Prof. Guyot's Text-Books on Geography, will be fully realized. Especial care has been bestowed upon the mechanical execution of the maps, which, for accuracy, artistic skill, and workmanship, will be found unrivalled specimens of the art.

Any Map, or any number of Maps of a Series can be selected, if a full set is not required. By the admirable system of coloring adopted, the plateaus, mountains, valleys, rivers, altitudes, in fact, all the physical characteristics of the Earth's surface, are clearly and beautifully expressed, as also the political features, boundaries, names of cities, etc., etc.

All intelligent Teachers will acknowledge that although of late years considerable progress has been made in the mode of teaching Geography, as well as some improvement in the text-books employed, unfortunately there has not been a corresponding improvement in the maps and other means of illustration.

It is a great error, productive of much mischief, to suppose that almost any map, however rough and incorrect, is good enough for a beginner, and for the walls of a school-room. From the nature of the mind, the first impressions received, especially in childhood, are the most lasting. The image of the first map that the child has seen and studied from, is likely to remain in his mind and accompany him through life. If this first image is incorrect, instead of being a help, it is a serious drawback in all his subsequent studies. The school-map is the foundation of his geographical knowledge, and should be true, solid, and correct, if the superstructure is to be so.

In view of these facts, these splendid series of Maps have been prepared and published, and will be found to combine all the essential qualities of good School-Maps.

1st. They are Correct.-They give the most reliable representation of the portion of the globe which they illustrate. To a great extent they have been worked out anew from original documents, and are, therefore, fresh and original.

2d. They are distinguished by Clearness and Simplicity. Such features as are fundamental and characteristic are presented, and there is a judicious omission of unimportant details.

3d.-Due Importance is given to the Physical Features, which so vitally affect the climate, river systems, productions and economic value, animals, and even the character of the inhabitants, their civil and political conditions. Unusual care has been taken to exhibit the forms of relief, the elevations and depressions of the surface. The differences in altitude of lowlands and plateaus are expressed by different tints, while the elevation and importance of the various mountain chains are indicated by the boldness of the topographical drawings-their depth of shading; thus exhibiting their relative gradations and true proportions. With these aids, and the profiles which accompany each map, it is easy to distinguish the fundamental features of the structure of each continent. In additition the nature of the surface, whether forest land, prairie, or deserts; also the limits of the zones, of the vegetable staples, together with the marine currents, are indicated by special signs.

4th.-The Political Boundaries, the principal cities, rivers, &c., are distinctly designated, so that the Maps are both physical and political.

5th.-Harmony has been preserved-that is, the true relative proportions of parts as found in nature. The prominence or subordination of each physical feature in the Map conforms to its prominence or subordination in nature.

"This is one of the most beautiful and instructive pieces of school and household apparatus for the instruction of the young we have yet seen. The globe being of iron, and the objects such as various races of men, lions, polar bears, steamboats, etc.— being magnetized, the latter adhere to whatever part of the surface they are placed on, and thus not only correctly localize the inhabitants, etc., of each portion of the earth, but satisfactorily present to the child's eye and mind the sphericity of the globe, and the relative position to each other of the various objects upon its surface. The idea brought before the public by this ingenious invention is a good one."— Penn. School Journal.

WALTON'S INTELLECTUAL ARITHMETIC,

(JUST PUBLISHED.)

WALTON'S SERIES OF ARITHMETICS,

CONSISTS OF

I. Walton's Pictorial Primary Arithmetic.
II. Walton's Intellectual Arithmetic.

III. Walton's Written Arithmetic.

THE PICTORIAL PRIMARY ARITHMETIC is designed to give the young learner his FIRST LESSONS IN NUMBERS. It is appropriately illustrated, and pursues the OBJECT METHOD; it is simple, complete, and original, presenting the elementary combinations of numbers in a series of progressive lessons, calculated to interest and develop the mind of the child.

THE INTELLECTUAL ARITHMETIC contains a full course of MENTAL EXERCISES, together with an INTRODUCTION to WRITTEN ARITHMETIC; and not only forms a connecting link in the series, but, used independently, meets the wants of the large class of students who can devote but little time to this study.

THE WRITTEN ARITHMETIC, for Common and Higher Schools, is a thoroughly analytical and progressive work; it presents the science of numbers in a philosophical manner, and affords a more full and varied practice than any other book of its class. Its original and thorough system of reviews commends it to every practical teacher. A distinguishing feature of this Arithmetic is its adaptation to the present wants of business life.

WALTON'S DICTATION EXERCISES

Are supplementary to Walton's Series. They comprise a simple card (with or without sliding slate) to be used by the Pupil, and

KEYS, Parts I. & II.,

To be used by the Teacher only.

PART I. contains above TWO THOUSAND EXAMPLES, (with their answers,) in the fundamental operations in Arithmetic.

[blocks in formation]

IN FEDERAL MONEY, COMMON AND DECIMAL FRACTIONS, COMPOUND NUMBERS, PERCENTAGE, SQUARE AND CUBE ROOTS, and MENSURATION.

These Exercises are so arranged that the Teacher may assign a SEPARATE EXAMPLE TO EACH PUPIL, in a class of 25, at a single dictation. They are especially designed for REVIEWS and TEST EXERCISES, and may be used in connection with, and supplementary to, any series of Arithmetics.

School Officers and Teachers wishing to examine the above works are invited to correspond with the Publishers
