House bill No. 77, "An act to amend (chapter 105, laws 1872,) section 2 of an act entitled 'An act to amend section 4 of chapter 23 of laws of 1868, and section 1 of chapter 65 of laws of 1871, concerning private corporations," was read the first time.

House bill No. 57, "An act to authorize the city of Independence to issue bonds of the city for the purpose of liquidating the indebtedness of the city," was read the first time.

House Bill No. 105, "An act to amend section 5, chapter 88, laws of 1870," was read the first time.

House bill No. 78, "An act to authorize school district No. 1, Coffey county, to issue additional bonds," was read the first time. House concurrent resolution No. 24, "In reference to protection of settlers upon Osage lands," was laid over under the rules.

House concurrent resolution No. 25, "Relating to a post route through the Indian territory," was laid over under the rules.

House concurrent resolution No. 26, "Appointing committee to report a bill for the registration of bonds," was laid over under the rules.

Mr. J. C. Wilson moved that the rules be suspended, and that

the bills just read the first time be read the second time and referred now; which motion prevailed.

Mr. Judd moved that the Senate resolve itself into committee of the whole for the consideration of bills on the calendar; which motion prevailed.

After some time spent therein the committee arose, and through their chairman made the following report:

MR. PRESIDENT: The committee of the whole have had under consideration Senate bill No. 15, "An act to repeal an act entitled 'An act to amend sections 51, 52 and 53 of an act entitled 'An act concerning private corporations;"" and I am directed to report said bill to the Senate with the recommendation that it be rejected.

Senate bill No. 67, "To amend chapter 71 of the general statutes of 1868, an act entitled 'An act respecting notaries public,'" and recommend that the enacting clause be stricken out.

Senate bill No. 4, "An act relating to the code of civil procedure, and amendatory of section 7 of chapter 87 of the laws of 1870," and recommend that it retain its place on the calendar.

Senate bill No. 66, "To amend the proviso to section 13, chapter 29, of the general statutes of Kansas," and recommend that the enacting clause be stricken out.

House bill No. 23, "An act to amend section 75 of chapter 24 of the general statutes, defining the boundaries of counties," and recommend that it be passed.

House bill No. 9, "An act for the relief of George Campbell," and recommend that it be passed.

Senate bill No. 43, "To create the sixteenth judicial district, and to provide for holding terms of court therein," and recommend that it retain its place on the calendar.

Senate bill No. 18, "An act to amend section 139 of the civil code of civil procedure," and recommend that it be passed.

Senate bill No. 56, "An act to authorize Montgomery county to issue bonds to pay the indebtedness of the county," and recommend that it be passed.

Senate bill No. 36, "To authorize railroad corporations to purchase the bonds and stock of other companies, and to indorse and

guarantee the same, and foreclose mortgages," and recommend that it be passed, subject to amendment on third reading.

Senate bill No. 55, "To repeal an act to provide for issuing the bonds of Mound City township, Linn county," and recommend that it be passed.

Senate bill No. 22, "An act to create the fifteenth judicial district, and to provide for a judge thereof, and for holding the terms of court therein," and recommend that it retain its place on the calendar.

Senate bill No. 16, "An act concerning universities and institutions of learning," and recommend that it be passed.

Senate bill No. 45, "To remove blind and deaf and dumb asylums to Shawnee county," and recommend that it retain its place on the calendar.

Senate bill No. 1, "An act to remove disabilities," and recommend that it be passed, subject to amendment on third reading.

Senate bill No. 51, "To encourage planting and growing forest trees in the State of Kansas," and recommend that it retain its place on the calendar.

Senate bill No. 27, "An act to amend an act entitled 'An act to prohibit hunting within the inclosures of others without leave,'" and recommend that it be rejected.

Senate bill No. 7, "An act creating the office of commissioner of statistics and emigration, and defining the duties thereof," and recommend that it be rejected.

House bill No. 38, "An act to amend section 1, of chapter 45, of laws of 1868, concerning the protection of game," and recommend that it be passed.

Senate bill No. 49, "An act creating the office of commissioner of statistics and emigration and defining the duties thereof," and recommend that it be rejected.

Senate bill No. 87, "An act with reference to the indigent sick," and recommend that it be rejected.

Senate bill No. 47, "Relating to killing of stock on railroads," and recommend that it be passed.

Roll called. The following gentlemen were present and answered to their names: Messrs. Blair, Brandley, Butler, Barker, Crichton, Edwards, Ely, Grimes, Judd, Martindale, McFarland, McWirt, Moonlight, Morrill, Murdock, O'Neil, Palmer, Rogers, Schmidt, Simons, Simpson, St. John, Topping, Walker, Wilson, V. The journal of yesterday was read and approved.

PETITIONS.

Mr. Simons presented a petition from William Sanford and 1,176 others, settlers upon the Osage lands, asking the legislature to memorialize congress to pass the proper measures for the relief of settlers upon those lands, which was laid upon the table.

Mr. Simons presented a petition of residents and tax-payers in school district No. 5, Neosho county, relative to the bonds of said district, which was referred to the committee of the whole Senate.

Mr. Ely presented a petition of R. W. Hough and 800 others, asking to have the number of judicial districts diminished, officers' salaries reduced, and that school district sinking funds be loaned out, or invested in bonds, and asking for other legislation, which was referred to the committee on finance and taxation.
