This being the day fixed by the Constitution of the State of Kansas for the meeting of the Legislature, the Senate was called to order by Lieutenant Governor E. S. Stover, who is by virtue of his office, President of the Senate. Prayer by the Rev. P. S. Clelland. On motion of Mr. Price, Mr. Murdock was elected Secretary pro tem. The roll being called, The following gentlemen answered to their names: Messrs. Blair, Brandley, Butler, Barker, Crichton, Edwards, Ely, Grimes, Guerin, Johnson, Martin, Martindale, Matheny, McFarland, Mc Wirt, Moonlight, Morrill, Murdock, O'Neil, Palmer, Price, Rogers, Schmidt, Simons, Simpson, St. John, Topping, Walker, J. C. Wilson, V. P. Wilson and York. Judge Brewer, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the State, was then introduced and the following oath of office was administered by him, and subscribed to by the following members: You and each of you do solemnly swear that you will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Kansas, and faithfully discharge the duties of State Senator of the State of Kansas, so help you God. Chas. S. Martin, Sam. Walker, A. M. York. The following affirmation was administered to J. C. Wilson and V. P. Wilson: We do solemnly, sincerely and truly affirm that we will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Kansas, and faithfully discharge the duties of the office of State Senator of the State of Kansas under the penalties and pains of perjury. The Senate adjourned until to-morrow at 9 o'clock A. M. M. M. MURDOCK, Secretary pro tem. MORNING SESSION. TOPEKA, January 15, 1873, 9 o'clock, a. M. Senate met pursuant to adjournment. President in the Chair. Roll called. The following gentlemen were present and answered to their names: Messrs. Blair, Brandley, Butler, Barker, Crichton, Edwards, Johnson, Judd, Martin, Martindale, Matheny, McFarland, Moonlight, Morrill, Murdock, O'Neil, Palmer, Price, Simpson, St. John, Topping, J. C. Wilson, V. P. Wilson, Winter and York. Quorum present. RESOLUTIONS INTRODUCED. Mr. Butler offered the following resolution: Resolved, That until otherwise ordered, the rules of the last Senate shall govern and be the rules of this Senate. Upon which a vote was had, and The resolution adopted. Mr. Butler then offered the following resolution: Resolved, That the members of the Senate proceed to select their seats in the following manner: The number of each Senatorial District shall be written on a slip of paper by the Secretary and placed in a proper receptacle, and each Senator, as the number of his district is drawn and called, shall select his seat for the session. Upon which a vote was had, and The resolution adopted. Byron Judd and J. T. McWirt then came forward and took and subscribed to the following oath : You, and each of you, do solemnly swear that you will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Kansas, and faithfully discharge the duties of the office of State Senator of the State of Kansas, so help you God. BYRON JUDD, Sworn and subscribed to before me this fifteenth day of January, A. D., 1873. D. J. BREWER, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Mr. Edwards moved that the Senate now proceed to elect permanent officers. Which motion prevailed. Mr. Moonlight nominated Mr. Murdock for President of the Senate pro tem. Upon which the roll was called with the following result: Gentlemen voting for Mr. Murdock were: Messrs. Blair, Brandley, Butler, Barker, Crichton, Edwards, Ely, Grimes, Guerin, Johnson, Judd, Martin, Martindale, Matheny, McFarland, McWirt, Moonlight, Morrill, O'Neil, Palmer, Price, Rogers, Schmidt, Simons, Simpson, St. John, Topping, Walker, J. C. Wilson, V. P. Wilson, Winter and York. Mr. Murdock having received a majority of all the votes cast was declared duly elected President of the Senate pro tem. |
