A message from the Senate by Mr. Hickey, their Chief Clerk:
Mr. Speaker: The Senate have passed bills of the following titles,

viz:

S. 444. An act to change the time for holding the courts in the northern district of Florida; and

S. 495. An act for the relief of David Waldo;

in which I am directed to ask the concurrence of this House.

A message was received from the President of the United Sates by James Buchanan, his private secretary, notifying the House that he did, on the 5th instant, approve and sign bills of the following titles, viz: H. R. 520. An act directing the conveyance of a lot of ground for the use of the public schools in the city of Washington;

H. R. 656. An act to grant a pension to Mary I. Harris, widow of Colonel Thomas L. Harris, deceased.

The House then resumed the consideration of the Missouri contested election case—the pending question being on agreeing to the resolutions reported from the Committee of Elections.

After debate,

Mr. Corwin moved, at 5 o'clock and 6 minutes p. m., that the House adjourn; which motion was disagreed to.

After further debate, Mr. Florence moved, at 6 o'clock and 15 minutes p. m., that the House adjourn; which motion was disagreed to.

On motion of Mr. Burnett, the House resolved itself into the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union; and after some time spent therein, the Speaker resumed the chair, and Mr. Perry reported that the committee having, according to order, had the state of the Union generally under consideration, and particularly the bill of the House (H. R. 217) making appropriations for the construction, preservation and repairs of certain fortifications and other works of defence for the year ending June 30, 1861, had found itself without a quorum, and that he had caused the roll to be called, when it appeared that the following named members were absent, viz:
