Mr. Reynolds moved that the vote last taken be reconsidered, and also moved that the motion to reconsider be laid upon the table; which latter motion was agreed to.

The title of the bill having been read,

Mr. Curry moved to amend the same so as to read "A bill to protect and support the republic of Liberia, in Africa, and to attach perpetually to the government of the United States the American Colonization Society."

After debate,

Mr. Bingham moved the previous question; which was seconded and the main question ordered, and under the operation thereof the said amendment was disagreed to.

The title was then agreed to.

Mr. Bingham moved that the vote last taken be reconsidered, and also moved that the motion to reconsider be laid upon the table; which latter motion was agreed to.

Ordered, That the Clerk request the concurrence of the Senate in the amendments of the House to the said bill.

Mr. Theaker, from the Committee on Enrolled Bills, reported that the Committee had examined and found truly enrolled bills of the following titles:

S. 117. An act for the relief of Guadalupe Estudillo de Argüello, widow of Santiago E. Argüello;

S. 238. An act for the relief of M. C. Gritzner;

S. 188. An act for the relief of the surviving grandchildren of Colonel William Thompson, of the revolutionary army of South Carolina;

S. 249. An act for the relief of Samuel J. Hensley; and

S. 371. An act for the relief of certain setters in the State of Iowa. When

Mr. Dawes having called up the report of the Committee of Elections in the case of Francis P. Blair, jr., contesting the seat of J. Richard Barrett as a representative from the first congressional district of Missouri.

The House proceeded to its consideration-the pending question being on the following resolutions accompanying the said report, viz: Resolved, That Hon. J. Richard Barrett is not entitled to a seat in the 36th Congress as a representative of the 1st congressional district of Missouri.

Resolved, That Hon. Francis P. Blair, jr., is entitled to a seat in the 36th Congress as a representative from the 1st congressional district of Missouri.

After debate,

Mr. Florence, by unanimous consent, moved a reconsideration of the vote by which the bill of the House (H. R. 814) providing for the erection of a post office in the city of Philadelphia was committed to the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union. And then,

A quorum being now present, the journal of yesterday was read. On motion of Mr. Hickman, by unanimous consent,

Ordered, That the Committee on the Judiciary be discharged from

the further consideration of the petitions of the heirs and representatives of Major John Campbell, deceased; of Anthony Addison, administrator of Margaret Leitch; and of Mrs. Mary Williams, widow of James Williams, and that the first two named petitions be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Claims, and the last to the Committee of Claims.

The Speaker having announced as the regular order of business the resolutions reported from the Committee of Elections in the Missouri contested election case

On motion of Mr. Sherman,

Ordered, That the further consideration of the same be postponed for one hour.

Mr. Noell having called up the motion, heretofore submitted by him, to reconsider the vote by which the bill of the Senate (S. 104) for the final adjustment of private land claims in the States of Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri, and for other purposes, was committed to a Committee of the Whole House

Mr. Fenton having called up the motion, heretofore submitted, to reconsider the vote by which the bill of the House (H. R. 13) to provide for the settlement of the claims of the officers and soldiers of the revolutionary army, and of the widows and children of those who died in the service

On motion of Mr. Sherman,

Ordered, That the further consideration of the said motion be postponed until the second Tuesday in December next.

The Speaker, by unanimous consent, laid before the House a letter

from the Postmaster General, transmitting, in answer to a resolution of the House of the 16th of May last, information in relation to the defalcation of Isaac V. Fowler, late postmaster at New York; which was laid on the table, and ordered to be printed.

On motion of Mr. Barnham,

Ordered, That the Committee on Patents be discharged from the further consideration of the petition of Hezekiah Haynes, and that the same be laid upon the table.

Mr. Rust. from the Committee on Roads and Canals, reported a joint resolution (H. Res. 43) giving the assent of Congress to certain acts passed or to be passed by the legislatures of the States of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, or any two of them, in relation to the raft of Red river, and for other purposes; which was read a first and second time.

Pending the question on its engrossment,

Mr. Rust moved the previous question; which was seconded and the main question ordered, and under the operation thereof the resolution was ordered to be engrossed and read a third time.

Being engrossed, it was accordingly read the third time.

The question then being on its passage,
