MEEKER'S BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPE NEAR MADISON [383] MEEKER, JOSEPH RUSLING. Original oil painting on canvas: "Lake Mendota, Madison, Wisconsin." 171⁄2 by 291⁄2 inches, framed. Signed and dated by the artist: "J. R. Meeker, 1871." 650.00

In this superb painting the "Master of Mississippi River artists" has adapted his style to the northern country, portraying its salient character by crisp clarity just as he gained the feeling of the steaming bayou country by a veil of mist. The sharp brilliance of the lake scene, with its boathouses and little sailboats dotting the canvas, and its lucid color and fine detail, combine to make this large and important work one of exceptional beauty. Meeker was born in 1827 and studied at the Academy of Design; he was at Buffalo with W. H. Beard in 1849, and later went to Louisville. In 1859 he went west and settled in St. Louis. He was instrumental in establishing the St. Louis Art Societyof which he served several terms as president and also the St. Louis Academy of Fine Arts. He is represented in the better museums and his works are exhibited whenever Mississippi River artists are shown.
