PREFACE.

NATURE, as well as Art, hath oft a preface. The dawn is the preface to the day, the budding spring to the glowing summer, childhood to manhood, time to eternity, and our life in this world to immortality in the next. A preface to a book should briefly indicate its character and the author's aim ; but in a Magazine these are partly known already to most persons, especially when the volume is one of a long series, and the editor himself has plied his pen upon it for half a generation. It was a happy conception that originated a magazine, a REPERTORIUM of Theology, History, Biography, Science, Providential Events, Public Occurrences, Extracts of Prose and Poetry from the best authors, and a Chronological Record of the doings of the Church of Christ. If such a work has not the advantage of a compact and consecutive treatise, it has the compensating attribute of an all-comprehensive variety; and, as a serial, it flows on with the stream of time and the course of events, gathering as it flows, and treasuring up, thousands of truths and fragments of truth, too precious to be lost, useful for the current hour, and useful, too, for generations yet unborn.

We presume not to speak of the literary merits of our own periodicals, further than to say that they are such as the Denomination itself supplies, and may not blush to own; and it is perfectly compatible with the decorum of true modesty to glance at the principal topics which are brought before the reader in the volume now placed in his hands. We have here twenty-four elaborate discourses or essays on such important topics as "Class Meetings; their Origin and Importance as a Means of Grace"- "Class Leaders; their Office and Place in the Economy of Methodism "-" The Duties and Responsibilities of the Ministry' "The Church's Strength"-" Christ our Example"-"The Invisible God"—" Personal Holiness, and how to attain it"-"The Transfiguration of Christ"-"The Death of Moses "-" Christ the Head of the Church "-" Christ the Eternal God"-"The Reformation of the Sixteenth Century "-"The American System of Government and the late War"-" The Sabbath
