A petition to the senate and the house of the state of Ohio was drawn up and circulated by the grand division of Ohio saying that a law prohibiting the sale of all intoxicating liquors is absolutely necessary for public welfare; that an act as nearly as possible identical with that of Maine should be passed by these honorable bodies.

2677 DTD Jan. 5:2/6 The ladies of the Illydian Temperance band propose holding a temperance festival at Empire hall on Jan. 8. All citizens of Cleveland are invited to attend. The tickets are 50g. Entertainment, addresses and toasts will tend to make the evening pleasant. On the committee on arrangements, consisting of 13 persons, are Eliza Kinney; Anna Kid, and 0. M. Washborn.

2678 DTD Jan. 8:2/3 - In a letter to the editor dated Jan. 6, "Koppa"

of Oberlin says: A public demonstration was made in Oberlin church
last Sabbath against liquor-selling in this place. The congregation
unanimously was in its favor.

2679 - DTD Jan. 6; ed: 3/1 The colored people will hold a temperance festival tonight. "Its object is good, and deserving the 'help' of every Christian and patriot."

2680 DTD Jan. 8:3/1 - General Cary will lecture this evening at the

Baptist church. "The simple announcement ought to crowd it with
friends of Temperance, eager to welcome and to listen to one of its
most eloquent and devoted champions.

2681 - DTD Jan. 9:2/1 A large number of delegates from Cleveland attended a temperance meeting held in the courthouse at Ravenna. Addresses were given by General S. F. Cary and Dr. Nevin. President Mahan remained to address the crowd in the evening.

2682 DTD Jan. 9:3/1 - The supper prepared last evening at the temperance festival was one of the finest we ever saw,

2683 - DTD Jan. 10; ed: 3/1 The temperance meeting held at the First
Baptist church organized Jan. 18 by appointing Foote chairman and open-
ed by a prayer from Professor Blanchard. Carey spoke of the age we
live in as an age of progress, an age that has never been equalled in
the world's history of advancement in civilization and discoveries in
science. He then asked whether man's morals should not be improved as
well as his material matters. By improving of his own morals, he
meant to destroy drunkenness and substitute temperance, he said.

"Let the citizens of Cleveland show that they appreciate the talents of the speaker and stand ready to aid the cause for which he is laboring, and by which he has won for himself the envied title of 'a true apostle of temperance.

2684 - DTD Jan. 14:4/2 S. F. Carey adressed a large audience yesterday in the First Baptist church. He spoke on the temperance question. 2685 - DTD Mar. 22:3/1 The Ladies' Temperance union will be adressed tomorrow evening at the Wesleyan church by a Mr. Briggs.

2686 - DTD Apr. 12:3/1 The committee on resolutions on arrangements for an evening session, and on arrangement for the next quarterly meeting were appointed at the morning session of the Cuyahoga Total Abstinence society, held at the church of the Rev. J. A. Thome in Ohio City at ten o'clock. Due to the illness of President Elisha Taylor, the vice president, J. A. Foot, was in the chair during the afternoon session, when seven resolutions were adopted. Knight lectured upon the practical operation of the Maine law.

will hold their next quarterly meeting at the Rev. E. H. Nevin's
church on June 30.

2689 - DTD June 30:3/1 The Cuyahoga Temperance convention meets at Dr. Nevin's church at ten o'clock this morning.

2690 DTD July 1:3/1 - The Cuyahoga county Temperance convention held its quarterly meeting in this city in the Reverend Mr. Nevin's church yesterday. President E. Taylor, Esq., on taking the chair made some pertinent remarks on the subject of the Maine law, and closed the speach by urging upon the friends of temperance the importance of concentrated action in the election of men to the next legislature favorable to the passage of most strngent measures on the subject of intemperance. The Reverend Shaw offered a resolution of thanks to the officers and members of the church for the use of their building, and also to the singers for their sweet music. The convention adjourned to meet in Olmstead next October.

2691 - DTD Aug. 30:2/4 Friends of temperance will hold a mass convention in Cleveland on Sept. 15, 16, and 17. They intend to adopt measures similar to the Maine liquor law.

2692 DTD Sept. 3:2/2 The friends of temperance will hold a convention in Cleveland during the state fair. The speakers will include the Hon. Samuel Houston, the Hon. George N. Briggs, the Hon. Neal Dow, John B. Gough, and several others.

2697 DTD July 7:3/1 - In a letter to the editor, "Drama" says:
Knowing your disinclination to speak of matters theatrical, I should
hesitate to trespass on your columns were it not that among your
readers are many who love and appreciate good acting and would be
delighted with the personations of Miss Bennett, a lady in every
sense, and an actress of rare merit. She has recently appeared at
leading theaters from New Orleans to New York and has met everywhere
with brilliant success. She begins as "Rosalind" in a short engage-
ment here.

2697-1/2 - DTD July 10:2/5 - Miss Julia Bennett has the honor of announcing her benefit for this evening. The interesting drama, VICTORIEN, will be presented for the first time, along with the comedy of THE FOLLIES OF A NIGHT.

will be one which will eclipse all other performances ever exhibited
in this city. The "Fakir of Siva" has, at a great expense, engaged
one of the most efficient stock companies extant, among whom are
some of the most popular stars of the American stage. Included are
Mr. Don, Mrs. C. F. Adams, W. S. Forrest, and Miss J. Bennett, whose

popularity throughout the United States is already well known. She will appear this evening in the character of "Duchess de Chartres" in the sterling comedy, THE FOLLIES OF A NIGHT. The Melodeon has been newly ventilated and is the coolest and best hall in the city.

2700 DTD July 13:2/4 - The Melodeon was well filled last night. Miss Julia Bennett deserves much credit for the beautiful manner in which she enacted the character of "Duchess de Chartres."
