156 - DTD Sept. 25; ed: 2/2 We are in receipt of Hawthorne's LIFE OF FRANKLIN PIERCE, sent by the Democratic National committee, requesting favorable notice.

"We will notice the book on Monday, (Sept. 27,) and as favorably as an honest press may dare speak of such a work, written by such an author, and for such a purpose. ་་

157 DTD Sept. 30:2/2 PIONEER WOMEN OF THE WEST, a book written by Mrs. Ellet, is a domestic history of the early settlers in the western wilds of America. The memoirs generally contain lively and spirited scenes. It's adventurous character will make it a fascinating book to the young people.

158 DTD Sept. 30; ed: 2/3 - UNCLE TOM'S CABIN AS IT IS, a novel written by a Mr. Smith, is a mere collection of "nigger talk," pointless and prosy. Without reference to the doctrine of these pro-slavery and antislavery novels, the execution of this novel is miserably bad.

(7)

159 DTD Sept. 30:2/3 - THE MEN OF THE TIME OR LIVING NOTABLES by Mr. Redfield, Clinton hall, New York, is concise and comprehensive and for that reason the better adapted for a book of reference.

renown.

CLEVELAND NEWSPAPER DIGEST JAN. 1 TO DEC. 31, 1852 Abstracts 165 - 171

DTD Oct. 18:2/3

BOOKS & AUTHORS (Cont'd) 165 THE BOOK OF SNOBS was written by W. M. Thackeray. Of Thackeray's merit as an author, it should be sufficient recommendation that the book was first published by PUNCH in 52 serials. PUNCH would not publish anything which did not possess merit. It is for sale by E. G. Knight and Company.

166 DTD Oct. 19; ed: 2/2 - The LONDON TIMES, in a criticism of UNCLE
TOM'S CABIN, damms "our peculiar institution" as infamous beyond utter-
ance; yet quotes with apparent approval the works of English travelers
in America who claim that the slaves are not so badly off as some of
her majesty's poor subjects. The TIMES commends the artistic excel-
lence of Mrs. Stowe's work and praises the instinct of her sex at taking
the shortest road to put her ideas "over" to her readers. "Some of
those fine compliments, for such we esteem them, we should be tempted
to quote, if 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' were a theme of incomparably less gen-
eral eulogy than it is."

167 DTD Oct. 20; ed: 2/1 - Clark and company, one of the "Houses" in
England who have published UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, gave a copy of it to one
of their printers to read before deciding to reprint it. The printer,
a Mr. Salisbury, in his report said that he read it to his wife and
that both he and she were moved first to laughter, then to tears. "Mr.
and Mrs. Salisbury's experience was by no means singular; and the judg-
ment of his tears and laughter has proved to be good even in the 'way
of trade.
