140 DTD June 26; ed: 2/3 "OLD SAM. JOHNSON, despite his bigotry, his dogmatism, his bearishness, the intensity of his hate, and even his incapableness of appreciating Milton, to say nothing of his abuse of that greatest of Englishmen, has ever been one of our Heroes, for we may as well make a clean breast of it, and confess ourselves the subject of any amount of hero-worship. We worship the Johnson for his learning, his sharp intellect, his blunt ingenuousness, his strong sense of justice, his self-reliance, his terrible scorn of meaness, his kind heart, his piety, and above all, his whole-souled abhorrence of cant.

"Of that last quality of the Johnson's, here is an expression, which we take from his pamphlet of TAXATION NO TYRANNY, and which is good enough almost to compensate the author's being on the wrong side of that great question: 'How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for Liberty amidst the drivers of slaves. BOOKS & AUTHORS (Cont'd)

In choosing a slave for the hero of his novel, our author has, in some respects, the advantage of every other. For while they must be confined within narrow limits of probability before him all barriers are struck down; the widest possible gates are thrown open.

This work is remarkably comprehensive as well as powerful. No evil of slavery is forgotten. Not only are the degradation and sufferings of slaves dwelt upon, but with equal spirit is described the terrible degradation of the master, the condition of poor whites at the south, and the deadening effect which it has exercised upon the North. It is for sale by Jewett, Proctor, and Worthington. Tappan and Whittemore of Boston are the publishers.
