them highly laudatory of it. On the appearance of Governor Wood's late annual Message, which recommends the distribution of copies of Dr. Webster's Dictionary to the school districts of our State,...we wrote an article expressing our opinion of the pre-eminent merit of that Dictionary, and our satisfaction at the Governor's recommendation in the premises.... We hope to publish the article before the adjourment of the General Assembly." (3)

86 DTD Jan. 24:2/3 - CHARITY AND ITS FRUITS is written by Jonathan Edwards, president of the College of New Jersey. This volume contains 16 lectures written by a man whose reputation will live as long as time and letters. 88 DTD Feb. 9:3/1 EXAMPLES OF LIFE AND DEATH is written by Mrs. L. H. Sigourney. This volume contains 24 short biographical sketches of persons of both sexes, and belonging to different countries and stations, who, through possessing various remarkable traits of character, are here distinguished chiefly for consistent and undeviating piety. These examples are widely separated in the calendar of time. The period in which they appeared and acted their parts in the theater of life, is included in 13 centuries, from the year 330 to 1591. We cordially recommend it to the reading community. The book is published in New York by Charles Scribner, 145 Nassau st. (12)

89 DTD Feb. 13; ed: 2/2 THE SKETCH OF THE LIFE AND PUBLIC SERVICES OF LEWIS CASS, by William T. Young, has just been published in Detroit by Markham and Elwood. In the preface, the author says that this book is not intended, on the eve of a presidential election, to recommend this individual.

"We do not wonder, after looking through the pages of this compilation, that Mr. Young should have been strongly tempted to say that; but in yielding to the temptation he has certainly shown that his sagacity is not of exactly the order which ought to be possessed by the biographer of so distinguished a politician as Gen. Cass. Nobody, with a forehead not 'villainously low,' can believe the statement, without supposing

the author to be young in years, as well as by name.

"And whatever may have been the 'purpose of its publication,' we know the book will be used as an electioneering document. We know, also, that it is fit for little else. It is an interminable stump-speech, such as a Western Cassite, of inexhaustible wind, and with an audience of inexhaustible patience, would be glad to deliver, in behalf of its subject's elevation to the next Presidency....

"Whoever desires to look at Mr. Young's execution of his great subject, may obtain his work at Younglove's, almost, we presume, for a song, but cheap, we are quite sure all the General's enemies would say, at any price."

Some ministers whom we know of would do well to purchase the present and the subsequent volumes of this eminent divine; and their hearers, too, who are in infinite need of some stronger food, will find it here.
