Whereupon, Messrs. Crawley, Carter and Glazebrook appeared before the bar of the House and were duly sworn into office by the Speaker.

The Speaker then announced that the House was ready for the transaction of business.

Message from the Senate:

The undersigned Senators were appointed by the Senate to inform the House that the Senate has organized by the election of Senators Francis M. Griffith, President, pro tempore; George S. Pleasants, Principal Secretary; Joseph F. Friedman, Assistant Secretary and William T. Mannix, Doorkeeper, and the Senate is ready for the transaction of legislative business.

Mr. McMullen offered the following resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, That a committee of two be appointed by the Speaker to act with a like committee, appointed by the Senate, to wait on His Excellency, the Governor, and inform him of the organization of the House and learn of him at what time it will suit his convenience to make whatever communication he may desire to make to the General Assembly, and that said committee report to this House its doings in the premises as soon as possible.

Mr. Hench offered the following resolution, and moved its adoption:

Resolved, That a committee of two (2) be appointed by the Speaker to inform the Senate that the House has organized by the election of James B. Curtis, of Marion County, as Speaker; Charles E. Crawley, of Sullivan County, as Principal Clerk; John D. Carter, of Orange County, as Assistant Clerk, and Bradford D. S. Glazebrook, of Stark County, as Doorkeeper, and is ready to proceed with the business of the session.

The resolution was adopted.

In conformity with the foregoing resolution, the Speaker appointed Messrs. Hench and Haggard as committee.

Mr. Ader offered the following resolution and moved its adoption :

Resolved, That the rules of the House of Representatives of the Fifty-seventh General Assembly, being the session of 1891, shall be the rules of this House until otherwise ordered, and that a committee of three be appointed by the Speaker to report rules for the government of this House.

Th resolution was adopted.

Mr. Cullop offered the following resolution and moved its adoption:

Resolved, That a committee of five be appointed by the Speaker to fix the number of employes of the House and their compensation.

The resolution was adopted.

The Speaker appointed on said committee Messrs. Cullop, Deery, Askren, Sexton and Bryant.

On motion of Mr. Fippen, the House adjourned until Friday morning at 10 o'clock.

A quorum being present, the transaction of business was commenced.

A joint resolution was read from the Senate, as follows:
Senate Joint Resolution No. 1:

WHEREAS, Alvin P. Hovey, late Governor and Chief Magistrate of the State of Indiana, in the providence of God has been removed by death from amongst us since the last session of the Legislature; therefore, be it

Resolved, That the President of the Indiana State Senate appoint a committee of three, and that a like committee of three be appointed by the Speaker of the House to confer together, and prepare suitable memorial and resolutions touching the life, character and public service of our late lamented Governor, and report the same on the 10th day of January, 1893, at 3 o'clock P. M.

The resolution was adopted.

Resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring, That a joint convention be held in the hall of the House of Representatives on Friday, January 6, 1893, at 11 o'clock A. M., for the purpose of hearing the message of the Governor.
