ON THE FOUNDATION OF THE NEW BUILDING

FOR THE

CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND.

JULY 20, A.D. 1862.*

BY AUBREY DE VERE.

The Land, how lies she cold and dead,
When on her brow long since
Freedom its virtuous radiance shed,
And drove the darkness thence?
The child at her its stone may fling;
The dragon-fly her cheek may sting-
"Ho! murdered was she, or self-slain,
This bulk with blackness in the brain ?"

II.

Ah me! in heavier days than these,
She lived, she moved, she woke :
Spurned outward bonds, like raging seas:-
Why wears her Mind the yoke?

Freedom and Franchise! vain and worse

Than vain are ye-a snare, a curse,

To serfs self-shackled, that abuse

Their rights, or know not how to use!

* There were present on this occasion, thirty-four Bishops, many of them

from remote countries, and about two hundred thousand spectators.

III.

"Tis past! the Realm has learned its want:

The Nation wills its work:

Her eastern skies with lustre pant,

Vacant till now and murk:

She swears with heavenly faith to join
The manly mind, the fixed design,

The mastering knowledge-public heart-
The nature crowned, not quenched by art.

IV.

'T was in a dolorous hour, 't was then
When Famine plagued our coast,
And Penal Law,* let loose again,

Trod feebly like a ghost

The land he once had stamped in blood,

"T was then her need we understood:

"I was then her Genius from a cloud

Looked forth, and cried to us aloud!

V.

The People heard; and, far and wide,
Like some long clarion blast,
By town, and plain, and mountain side,

The inspiring Mandate passed.

His children's crust the peasant shared

With him that brought the news; and bared

A hut already blank, to aid

That great emprize too long delayed.

The "Ecclesiastical Titles' Bill". It was in 1851, at the close of the great famine, so quickly followed by this penal measure, that the Catholic University of Ireland was, appropriately, undertaken.
