"And are built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone."Eph. 2: 20.

There is no product of human skill more imposing than a splendid temple. The attraction does not lie simply in its massive proportions, its symmetry of parts, its grandeur as a whole, nor in the beauty of its adornments; but there is a transcending charm in the purpose for which it was built, the religious aim which is expressed by its walls and towers. Man may be allowed to build grand ly when he builds to God; and many times has the hyperbole of the poet had much truth in it where he says of the builder:

"He builded better than he knew,

The conscious stone to beauty grew." This was true of the Early Christians, in reference to their religious faith and efforts. A favorite metaphor with St. Paul was that of a grand temple, of which every Christian was a part, as a living stone, "builded together for an habitation of the Spirit."

Of this stupendous fabric, prophets and apostles formed parts, Jesus Christ, himself being as the chief corner stone which unites the two sides of the building and presents a fit foundation for the structure. Whatever has unity with Christ is represented as so naturally combined with this foundation, that the whole building is represented as being fitly framed together in Him, and, like a human body, growing unto an holy temple in the Lord. Every human soul is destined, as we believe, to become a portion of this vast habitation of God; and the splendor of its final completion is but faintly pictured in the gorgeous vision of St. John, in the Book of Revelation, where he speaks of the New Jerusalem, the City of God.

Such is our faith, recognizing the only result which accords with the infinite perfections of God, and receiving the Scriptures as the grand basis of reasoning.

It is well for us sometimes to go over the foundations and the superstructure of our faith in something like detail, that we may be able to group easily together the great prin
