A PEACEFUL SCENE IN THE MIDST OF A WAR-DESOLATED LAND The picture shows the Niemen Kiver at Kovno, in Russian Poland. While there has been fierce fighting at other points on the Niemen, Kovno was surrendered to the Germans without being bombarded, and in evacuating the city its Russian owners did not attempt to destroy it. In this war it has fared better than at other times in its long history, for in 1655 it was plundered and burned by the Czar Alexis. Kovno has long been an important center
