THIS little work is meant to be partly introductory, partly supple-
mentary, to the Progressive Exercises of Mr. Gepp. It will serve as an
introduction to that deservedly popular treatise, inasmuch as it begins
with the simplest elements of Latin verse composition. It may also
serve as a supplement, from its containing a number of Exercises similar
