The young children ask bread, And none breaketh it unto them. "They that did feed on dainties Are desolate in the streets;

They that were brought up in scarlet

Embrace dunghills.

For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater Than the sin of Sodom,

That was overthrown as in a moment,

And no hands fell upon her.
Her princes were purer than snow,
They were whiter than milk,
They were more ruddy in body
than rubies,

Their polishing was as of sapphire;

How is the gold become dim! How is the most fine gold changed!

The hallowed stones are poured out At the head of every street. "The precious sons of Zion, Comparable to fine gold,

How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers,

The work of the hands of the potter!

Even the jackals draw out the breast,

They give suck to their young ones; The daughter of my people is become cruel,

Like the ostriches in the wilder

ness.

- "The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth

To the roof of his mouth for thirst;

They are not known in the streets; Their skin is shrivelled upon their bones;

It is withered, it is become like a stick.

"They that are slain with the sword are better

Than they that are slain with hunger;

For these pine away, stricken through,

For want of the fruits of the field. 10The hands of women full of compassion

Have sodden their own children; They were their food

In the destruction of the daughter of my people.

He hath poured out His fierce anger; And He hath kindled a fire in Zion, Which hath devoured the founda

The kings of the earth believed not, Neither all the inhabitants of the world,

And the iniquities of her priests, That have shed the blood of the just

14They wander as blind men in the streets,

They are polluted with blood,
So that men cannot

Touch their garments.

15 Depart ye! unclean!' men cried unto them,

'Depart, depart, touch not'; Yea, they fled away and wandered; Men said among the nations: 'They shall no more sojourn here.' 16The anger of the LORD hath divided them;

He will no more regard them; They respected not the persons of the priests,

They were not gracious unto the elders.

17As for us, our eyes do yet fail For our vain help;

In our watching we have watched For a nation that could not save. 18They hunt our steps,

That we cannot go in our broad places;

Our end is near, our days are fulfilled;

For our end is come. 19Our pursuers were swifter

Than the eagles of the heaven; They chased us upon the mountains,

They lay in wait for us in the wilderness.

20The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, Was taken in their pits;

Of whom we said: 'Under his shadow

We shall live among the nations.' "Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,

That dwellest in the land of Uz: The cup shall pass over unto thee also;

Thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.

The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion,

He will no more carry thee away into captivity;

He will punish thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom,

He will uncover thy sins.

THE words of Koheleth, the son of them of former times; neither shall David, king in Jerusalem.

'anity of vanities, saith Koheleth; anity of vanities, all is vanity.

What profit hath man of all his labour
Wherein he laboureth under the sun?
One generation passeth away, and
another generation cometh;
And the earth abideth for ever.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun
goeth down,

And hasteth to his place where he
ariseth.

The wind goeth toward the south,
And turneth about unto the north;!
It turneth about continually in its
circuit,

And the wind returneth again to its
circuits.

All the rivers run into the sea,

Yet the sea is not full;

there be any remembrance of them of latter times that are to come, among those that shall come after.

121 Koheleth have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven; it is a sore task that God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith. 14[ have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. 15That which is crooked cannot be made straight;

And that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

how to pamper my flesh with wine, and, my heart conducting itself with wisdom, how yet to lay hold on folly, till I might see which it was best for the sons of men that they should do under the heaven the few days of their life. I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards; I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit; I made me pools of water, to water therefrom the wood springing up with trees; I acquired men-servants and maidservants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that were before me in Jerusalem; I gathered me also silver and gold, and treasure such as kings and the provinces have as their own; I got me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, women very many. 'So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom stood me in stead. 10And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy, for my heart had joy of all my labour; and this was my portion from all my labour. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.

12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness and folly; for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done. 13Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

14The wise man, his eyes are in his head;

But the fool walketh in darkness.

And I also perceived that one event happeneth to them all. 15Then said I in my heart: 'As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise?' Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity. 16For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will long ago have been forgotten. And how must the wise man die even as the fool! 17So I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

I laboured under the sun, seeing that 18 And I hated all my labour wherein I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my 19And who knoweth labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. 20Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labour wherein I had laboured under the sun. For there is a man whose labour is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skill; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil. For what hath a man of all his labour, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he his days are pains, and his occupation laboureth under the sun? 28 For all vexation; yea, even in the night his heart taketh no rest. vanity. than that he should eat and drink, and 24There is nothing better for a man labour. This also I saw, that it make his soul enjoy pleasure for his from the hand of God. "For who is will eat, or who will enjoy, if not 1? 988
