PUBLIC DRINKING FOUNTAINS.

These useful as well as ornamental additions to our "public institutions," were erected during the summer of 1871. They are located as follows:

1. Intersection of Woodward avenue and Fort street, with gas.

2. Front of Opera House, Campus Martius, with gas. Intersection of Cass street and Grand River ave.

3.

4. Intersection of Randolph and Congress streets and Michigan Grand avenue.

5. Intersection of First and Woodbridge streets and Jefferson avenue, with gas.

6. Intersection of Randolph and Gratiot streets and Miami avenue, with gas.

7. Intersection of Woodward avenue and Franklin

street, with gas.

8. Intersection of Jefferson and Woodward avenues

with gas.

Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8 have gas lamp posts attached.

FIRE DEPARTMENT.

The Fire Department is governed by a Fire Commission, created by the Legislature, viz: "An act to create a Fire Commission in the city of Detroit," approved March 26, 1867. The Commission organized April 1, 1867, under this act, the members being William Duncan (term of office five years), Theodore H. Hinchman (term of office four years), James W. Sutton (term of office three years) and Lucretius H. Cobb (term of office two years). William Duncan was elected President of the Board, and B. Franklin Baker appointed Secretary. Every Commissioner appointed at the end of said terms shall hold his office for four years, or until his successor is appointed, and all successors shall be appointed by the Common Council, on the nomination of the Mayor. Lucretius H. Cobb was re-appointed, and his term of office will expire April 1, 1873. Benjamin Vernor was appointed to succeed James W. Sutton, and his term of office will expire April 1, 1874.
