In March, 1871, the new library, being an addition built on to the rear of the Capitol School building for that purpose, was opened, and now enjoys ample shelf room, tasteful surroundings and all opportunities for convenient classification and easy management. During the same year, the Board of Education secured the conditional lease, for a nominal rent, of the old City Hall building for a period of 50 years, for library purposes, which was however subsequently abandoned, and the small triangular park east of Dr. Duffield's church, known as "Centre Park" was leased to said Board by the Common Council sitting as a Land Board in May 22, 1872. On this site it is proposed to erect a permanent Library building, as soon as possible, costing $125,000, of ample accommodations, beautiful design and in keeping with the progress and improvement now visible in all portions of our city.
