Registered enemies of the United States are hereby ordered to leave this Department on or before the 15th day of May proximo. General is charged with the peremptory execution of this order.

New Orleans, April 29, 1863.

W. G. Betterton, convicted, by evidence and confession, of fraudulently violating the regulations concerning trade in this Department, by concealing articles contraband of war in barrels, entered at the Customhouse as barrels of beef, and by other fraudulent violations of the same regulations, with the intention of transporting them, without authority, to the enemy's lines, is sentenced by the Commanding General of this Department to pay a fine of twenty-five thousand dollars, to be appropriated to the improvement of the city of New Orleans, and to an imprisonment of one year, at hard labor, in Fort Pickens, for the benefit of the United States BY COMMAND OF MAJOR GENERAL BANKS:

Any person who shall be convicted before the Commanding General of this Department of furnishing supplies to the enemies of the United States in arms, shall suffer the penalty of death.
