HEADQUARTERS, DEPARTMENT OF THE GULF, 19TH ARMY CORPS,

New Orleans, March 28th, 1863.

The commanding officer of each battalion and detached company of cavalry will immediately make to these Headquarters a report showing the the name, rank and date of muster into service of each commissioned officer; the names of all officers absent, and whether on duty or with or without leave; and, if on duty, the nature thereof; the number of enlisted men present for duty; the number of enlisted men present and absent; the number of serviceable horses; and the number of unserviceable horses. These reports must show the above particulars for each company.

GENERAL ORDERS

HEADQUARTERS, DEPARTMENT OF THE GULF, 19TH ARMY CORPS,

No. 24.

March 28, 1863.

I. Before a General Court Martial, convened at the city of New Orleans, pursuant to Special Orders No. 65, of March 6th, 1863, from these Headquarters, and of which Captain GEORGE M. DICKERMAN, 26th Massachusetts Volunteers, is President, were arraigned and tried :

1. Private Marshall Lander, Company D. 21st Indiana Volunteers, upon the following charge and specification :

CHARGE- Desertion of Post."

SPECIFICATION" In this, that he, Marshall Lander, private of Company D, 21st Indiana Regiment Artillery, having been duly detailed and posted as a sentinel on post No. 8 of the camp guard of said 21st Regiment, did leave his post and arms and so remain for a long time, and until arrested by the officer of the day. All this at camp 21st Indiana Artillery, in the city of New Orleans, on or about the morning of the 19th of day of February, 1863."

To which charge and specification the accused pleaded-- Not Guilty." After mature deliberation on the evidence adduced, the Court finds the accused as follows:

Of the specification--" Guilty."

Of the charge-" Guilty."

And does therefore sentence him "to forfeit one month's pay to the United States, and to be confined at hard labor for twelve days, with ball and chain attached to his left leg, ball weighing twenty-four pounds."

2. Private Perry R. Booker, Company C, 21st Indiana Volunteers.

CHARGE" Desertion of Post."

SPECIFICATION" In this, that he, Private Perry R. Booker, of Company C, 21st Indiana Artillery, having been duly detailed and posted as a sentinel on post No. 2 of the camp guard of said regiment, did leave his post and arms, and so remain for a long time, and until arrested by the officer of the day. All this at camp 21st

Indiana Artillery, in the city of New Orleans, on or about the morning of the 19th day of February, 1863."

To which charge and specification the accused pleaded-" Not Guilty."

After mature deliberation on the evidence adduced, the Court finds the accused as follows:

Of the specification—“ Guilty."

Of the charge-Guilty."

And does therefore sentence him "to forfeit one month's pay to the United States, and to be confined at hard labor for six days, with ball and chain attached to his left leg, ball to weigh twenty-four pounds."

3. Private John W. Burnett, Company D, 21st Indiana Volunteers.

CHARGE- Desertion of Post."

SPECIFICATION— - In this, that he, John W. Burnett, a private of Company D, 21st Regiment Indiana Artillery, having been duly posted as a sentinel on post No. 9 of the camp guard of said 21st Regiment Indiana Artillery, did leave his post and arms, and so remain for a long time, and until arrested by the officer of the day. All this at camp 21st Indiana Artillery, in the city of New Orleans, on or about the morning of the 19th day of February, 1863."

To which charge and specification the accused pleaded-"Not Guilty."

The Court, after mature deliberation on the evidence adduced, finds the accused as follows:

4. Private Thomas J. Blevins, Company D, 21st Indiana Volunteers.

CHARGE" Conduct contrary to Good Order and Military Discipline." SPECIFICATION 1st- "In this, that he, the said Private Thomas J. Blevins, Company D, 21st Indiana Volunteers, did forge a pass, signing Thomas J. Redgrave's (Assistant Surgeon) and Lieutenant Bough's names, or got some one to do so for him."

SPECIFICATION 2d-" In this, that he, the said Private Thomas J. Blevins, Company D, 21st Indiana Volunteers, did give the said pass to another private, Harrison Shoemaker, of Company K, 21st Regiment Indiana Volunteers, for him to pass on. All this at or near Camp. Parapet, Louisiana, on or about the 22d day of November, 1862."
