Abraham lincoln was born on the 12th February, 1809, 111 the State of Kentucky Those who place farth m ped1gree, m bemg the descendants of a good stock, W111 be dlsappomted to learn, that the only trunk Wth can be traced for the Amencan Pre81dent's famfly tree, 18 hls grandfather, after whom he was named, who was a very poor backwoodsman m Kentucky, and who was murdered and scalped by the nat1ve Indlans there, not far from the mlserable log cabm Wth he occupled, sometlme about the year 1780 Thomas Llncoln, the father of the subject of th1s essay, was th1s unfortunate man's younger son, and was a mere mfant when h1s father was murde1 ed He grew up w1thout any educatlon whatever, bemg employed about a farm from a very early age In 1806, he marrled Nancy Hanks, who was mother of Abraham moln Thomas moln and hls w1fe belonged to the desplsed class, styled m Kentucky, the poor wh1tes, but Mrs moln was a supenor woman of her class She could not wute, but she had the advantage of her husband, m bemg able to read we find that they attended a Baptlst Chapel, that Mrs moln was noted for plety, and was much respected by her nelghbours She was very de31rous that her chrldren should have some educat1on, and when only seven years of age, Abraham was sent to a country school, m the nelghbour hood his school days here, however, came to a very early close, hls father, w1th all hls household, havmg emjgrated to the free State of Indlana, m the Autumn of 1816, a vely few months after he had been sent to school Thomas moln found hrs posmon, as a poor whlte.
