Item 16. Same, excluding freight lines and also excluding lines on which only one engine is in service. (This indicates what is to be entered in column 29 of signal-report form No. 1.)

Item 17. Percent of item 16, operated under the block system. (b) Instructions.

Item 18. In general, begin at the east or north end of the road or division or district, and enter items in the table in geographical order so far as practicable. If a geographical record is already in use the report may be made on the plan in use. If there is in use a map or sketch of the road, or a table or characteristic sheet showing information here asked for, a copy of that may accompany the report.

Item 19. Note any change which has been made since January 1 of the preceding year in the regulations under which the block system is operated, particularly in cases where its use has been extended.

Item 20. In columns 14, 17, 20, and 23 of signal-report form No. 1, write for each item the total number of stations. If a station which is at the end of one section and the beginning of another is counted twice, the total for the whole road should be reduced to the actual number of stations. Columns 15, 18, 21, and 24 are for items showing the number of block stations not open throughout 24 hours at least 6 days in each week. (See item 45, § 133.2 (c).)

Item 21. Track operated jointly and equipped with block signals should be included in the block-signal mileage reported by each company and attention called to it in a footnote. Block-signal lines over which a company has trackage rights should be included only in the tabulated report of the company operating the same; for roads having such trackage rights the block-signal mileage should be entered in footnotes only. These footnotes should accompany signal-report form No. 1. (See item 106, § 133.9 (a).)

Item 22. The signals, apparatus, and practices are to be described in column 2 of signal-report form No. 1 and in a summary to be made on signal-report form No. 2, using the abbreviations listed in item 113, § 133.9 (c).

†The source of §§ 133.1 to 133.9, inclusive, is Annual report of signal, interlocking, automatic train control, and train order statistics, Interstate Commerce Commission, Nov. 3, 1937, 2 F.R. 2771.

133.2 Signal apparatus; Form No. 2-(a) Kinds of signals, apparatus, and practices:

Item 23. On form No. 2 all information as to amount of apparatus should be given in terms of miles of road or of track, as required by column heading. Number of signals should not be inserted in these columns.

(b) Automatic block system:

Item 24. Semaphores, electro-pneumatic.

Item 25. Semaphores, electric motor:
Direct current.

Alternating current.

Item 26. Semaphores, electro-gas.

Item 27. Light signals:

Color.

Position.

Item 28. In a footnote describe other types used, such as colorposition light signals, and indicate mileage of each type. Item 29. Totals:

Normal-clear or normal-danger signals.

Four-indication, three-indication, or two-indication signals. Show separately miles of road and miles of track on which signals having more than four indications are used.

Upper-quadrant or lower-quadrant signals.

Item 30. Indicate whether signals are overlapped. State (1) whether a home signal is overlapped with the next succeeding home signal, (2) whether a distant signal is overlapped with its home signal, (3) whether a distant signal controls two blocks, (4) or other similar arrangements.

Item 31. Indicate on bottom of form 2, miles of single track operated under absolute permissive block system.

Item 32. Show mileage on which automatic block signals are electrically lighted.

Item 33. It is assumed that on single-track lines equipped with automatic block signals (shown in columns 3-4) the number of block sections is the same, or approximately the same, for trains moving in one direction as for those moving in the other direction. If there is a considerable difference, it should be shown in a footnote.

(c) Nonautomatic block system:

Item 34. Used with Morse telegraph. (See item 107, § 133.9 (a).) Item 35. Used with telephones.

Item 36. Used with electric bells (without electric control of levers). Item 37. Controlled with track circuit. (See item 108, § 133.9 (a).)

Item 38. Controlled with track circuit at each station.

Item 39. Controlled with track circuit throughout block section.
Item 40. Electric train staff.

Item 41. Three-indication or two-indication signals.
Item 42. Upper-quadrant or lower-quadrant signals.

Item 43. In connection with manual signals, on signal-report form No. 1 in columns 14, 17, 20, and 23 give the total number of block

Page 1610

stations, and in columns 15, 18, 21, and 24 the total number of such stations usually closed a part of the day or night.

Item 44. Show mileage on which permissive block signaling is forbidden; also the mileage on which permissive block signaling is allowed, as follows: By order of dispatcher or by regular train order in each case, by rule, by 3-indication signal, by 2-indication signal, by flag or lantern, or by caution card.

Item 45. Block signals used for following movements only and not to prevent butting collisions, should be indicated by the letter "q" on signal-report form No. 1 and the mileage so classified on signal-report form No. 2.

Item 46. If the block system is not used for all trains or its use is suspended throughout the line for a part of the day or night, the fact should be stated. If the use of the block system is suspended for several weeks or months during the year, this should be explained.

Item 47. If, as in the case of a signal opposite a station office, the stopping of a train with the engine several rods beyond the signal is recognized as a stop for that signal, the fact should be indicated by the letter "s." This mileage should be also shown on signal-report form No. 2.

Item 48. Where automatic signals are installed between nonautomatic block-system signal stations, the report should so state; such automatic signals are not to be included under automatic block-signal mileage.

(d) Automatic and nonautomatic block system:

Item 49. Show mileage on which alternating current is used in automatic signal-operating circuits, and to control the operation of signals with the controlled manual block-system.

Item 50. Show mileage on which alternating current is used in track circuits.

Item 51. Indicate mileage on which any form of automatic train stop or train control is used.

Item 52. Indicate mileage on which any form of cab-signal system is used and state whether and to what extent this cab-signal system is (1) an adjunct of the automatic train-stop or train-control system, or of the block-signal system.

Item 53. State miles of track equipped with automatic train stop or train control operated without wayside signals.

Item 54. State colors of night-signal indications.
