Whereas, History is replete with the record of the good and true; and

Whereas, Almighty God, in His Divine Providence, has removed from our midst the Hon. James H. Lucas, first President of our Society, whose varied talents, business enterprise and unostentatious charities have been indelibly stamped upon the rise and progress of St. Louis; and

Whereas, While we bow in reverence and humble submission to this temporal separation, we hope to be united with him in more lasting bonds hereafter; therefore, be it

Resolved, That this Society mourns the loss of its first President, Hon. James H. Lucas, whose presence cheered it, whose counsels. awakened it into activity, whose aid strengthened it in its incipiency and nourished its efforts into the full fruition of actual existence and

permanency.

Resolved, That the deceased, having donated to this Society a very handsome and valuable site whereon to erect a building for the purposes of the MISSOURI HISTORICAL SOCIETY, we hereby acknowledge the gratuity and thus publicly record our gratitude.

Resolved, That these resolutions of our sympathy and condolence be spread upon the records of this Society, and that the Secretary be requested to furnish copies of them to the press of St. Louis and to the family of our deceased friend and benefactor, whose memory we shall ever cherish with affection, and whose good deeds shall constitute a pleasing feature upon the pages of the MISSOURI HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
