DEDICATION.

To Sir DAVID WILKIE, R.A.

SIR,

The attachment I have to my native country, and the remembrance of the many happy scenes I have witnessed at Penny Weddings, induced me to undertake the publication of this small work, in the hope that it might be the means of awakening pleasing recollections in the bosoms of those who have witnessed such scenes, and afford to others an opportunity of becoming acquainted with the ceremonies peculiar to Scotland when a marriage took place among the peasantry and middling classes of society. How far my humble endeavour may prove satisfactory to the public, time alone can show; in the mean time it affords me the highest gratification to know that it has met the approbation of one whose eminent talents have raised him to such distinction, and who is the most competent judge, having already immortalized the subject by the splendid effusion of his pencil.

The very kind manner in which you were pleased to permit me to dedicate the work to you commands my sincerest gratitude, more especially as I had no introduction, and was personally unknown to you.

I have the honour to be, with the highest respect,

7, Wellington street North, Strand,

London, August 2d, 1836.

SIR,

Your most devoted humble servant,

JOHN GRANT.
