THE HE title-page of this volume will explain its purpose. It is intended to be a help to religious thought, in harmony with the Church Service, on the days for which Readings are assigned. Any one who has looked at the Officebooks of the Latin Church will remember the conspicuous place which is given in them to short extracts from the Fathers, following up the Lessons from Scripture; and there is no reason why this arrangement should not be deemed suggestive, in regard to the private devotional reading of English Churchmen. As the Readings are meant for use, abbreviation has been often resorted to for convenience' sake, where it did not injure the thought of the original. On one feature of the book it may be desirable to say a few words: and that is, the number of passages strictly theological or doctrinal.
