As another example, Public Law 88-156, approved October 24, 1963, the Maternal and Child Health and Mental Retardation Planning Amendments of 1963, amends several sections in title 42 of the United States Code and adds several new sections which will appear in title 42 at sections 1391-1394. These references are included in this index even though the new sections do not appear in the current edition of the United States Code and Supplement.

Reference to "CFR" are to the Code of Federal Regulations, including its Cumulative Pocket Supplements. This is a compilation prepared by the Division of the Federal Register of the National Archives and published by the Government Printing Office. For example, a citation, "42 CFR 51.1" refers to the Code of Federal Regulations, title 42, section 51.1. All references are to the latest promulgations or amendments included in the compilation, whether published in the bound volumes or in the pocket supplements.

Legal references are given only under the main entry for any descriptive statement. Cross-references indicate the heading under which the statement appears in the main body of this catalog and also where the legal citations appear in this subject index.
