§ 144.27 Furniture and furnishings. (a) Waste paper baskets shall be constructed of approved incumbustible materials and shall have solid sides. (b) For the purpose of this part, rooms containing incombustible furniture will be considered as those rooms in which all case furniture such as desks, wardrobes, dressing tables, bureaus, dressers, etc., is constructed entirely of incombustible materials, and all free standing furniture such as chairs, tables, sofas, etc., is constructed with frames of incombustible material. Upholstery, drapes, etc., may be of combustible materials in such spaces. (c) No combustible furniture or furnishings may be installed in corridors or stairway inclosures. § 144.29 Alternate materials. (a) In any case where it is shown to the satisfaction of the Commandant that the use of fire retardant materials required by §§ 144.09 to 144.27, inclusive, for the construction or material alteration of any vessel is not reasonable nor practicable, the Commandant may permit the use of alternate materials to such an extent and upon such conditions as will insure, to his satisfaction, a degree of safety consistent with the minimum standards set forth in this part. Vessels to be converted for the transportation of personnel to and from salvage operations, offshore oil drilling operations, and similar operations, may be given special consideration.
