NOR the law shadow of good 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised: 24 And let us consider one another, to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. 26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judg Fto come, and not the very image of the ment and fiery indignation, which shall de vour 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. 7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God. the adversaries. 28 He that despised Moses' law died with out mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that bath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; 33 Partly, while ye were made a gazing8 Above, when he said, Sacrifice and offer-stock, both by reproaches, and afflictions; and ing and burnt-offerings and offering for sin thou partly, while ye became companions of them wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; that were so used. which are offered by the law; 9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. CHAP. XII. 1 An exhortation to constant faith, patience, and godliness 22 A commendation of the ner testament above the old. For if they escaped not who refused bim that spake on earth, much more shall not we escupe, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: 26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more shake not the earth only, but also heaven. 27 And this word, Yet once more signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken, may remain.. 28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: 29 For our God is a consuming fire. O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and hitter? 12 Can the fig-tree, my brethren, bear oliveberries either a vine, figs? So can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wi wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. CHAP. IV. 1 Against covetousness, 4 intemperance, 5 pride, 11 detraction, 13 and rash judgment. works, and by works was faith made perfect? Whosoever therefore will be a dead, so faith without works is dead also. CHAP. III. friend of the world is the enemy of God. 1 We are not rashly or arrogantly to reprove 6 But he giveth more grace. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judg eth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law; but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another' 13 Go to now, ye that say, To-day or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and ?
