Some criticism may be expressed on the freedom with which material departures have been made from the original, making the present issue an adaptation, rather than a new edition in the accepted sense of the word. But having been written by a Protestant, and mainly for Protestant readers, the work would not be acceptable, without many modifications, to the Catholic public, for whom the te-issue has been chiefly intended. The extent of the changes is fully explained in the Introduction. The part of the book, however, which contains the Memoirs of the Protestant Primates, has suffered no alteration, except that the chapters have been arranged in a more readable form.
