Year after year, and day after day, as they pass away, bring us nearer to it. The loss of friends assures us of its approach; the funerals that we meet, yea, every thing in this world should remind us of it; the leaf that falls-the bubble that bursts in the air-yea, the fall of empires, and the decay of cities, all read an awful lecture to man, that his turn must come the nextall tell him, that he must die. But how different is man from the perishable objects of the world! The leaf falls and dies. The city or an empire decays, no more to rise for ever. But man, when the trumpet shall sound, shall throw off the cold torpor of the dead, the corruptions of the earth, and rise again and live. The mortal shall put on immortality-the corrupt, incorruption-the carnal, spirituality. God's best work was man; to him he gave the dominion over the earth; before him he assembled the animals, that he had made to bow down in subjection to him: for man sprang up the stores and the riches of the earthyea, for man, Divinity came from heaven, and shrouded his eternal glories in humanity,

and in that form died for his guilt. The Son of God atoned for the sins of the world, and reconciled the Deity to the lost and fallen in Adam. To sanctify and to save man, God sent his Holy Spirit-for man, God hath prepared the kingdom of heaven-his own abode hath he offered to his faithful followers in Christ Jesus. This, my brethren, is the reward -this is what the Almighty deems it right that you should receive. The pay is large, the labour is small, the teous, the work is easy.

my brethren, into the Lord's vineyard; embrace his Gospel; hold fast the faith, and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. Say not, that no man hath hired you; for his ministers are continually calling you to the warfare-urging you to work out your own salvation, and to make your calling and election sure. "My yoke is easy," saith the Son of God," and my burden light;" and to bear this yoke you have the promise of the assistance of the Holy Ghost. Let not then year after year

roll by, yea, let not another day pass without enlisting yourselves among the faithful soldiers of the Lord.

But we judge not of men; for it is God's judgment: and what thinks he when he finds his courts deserted his holy Sacrament, by some, despised his Church abused-his ministers slighted, and his sheep wandering from the true fold, far away from the true shepherd, Jesus Christ, the Son of God? He marketh all our ways-he knoweth all our thoughts, and by our words and works shall we receive our reward. Whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive." The invitation is pressing-the necessity of obeying it absolute. Make up your minds, my brethren, before this year shall pass away, to go and work in the Lord's vineyard it may be the eleventh hour-it may be the last call that you will have the opportunity of hearing; for shortly, the night cometh, or rather death, when no man can work. May God's blessing attend you; and if it be God's will, may temporal

SERMON XVIII.

2 COR. v. 18, 19.

"All things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation."

THE fall of the creature in Adam, and his being made alive in Christ may be considered the most important of Scriptural revelations. The text before us contains in a few words the great mystery of Godliness. It directs our minds to the great Author and Maker of all things: for "all things are of God." It assures us of the reconciliation, which has taken place between our Father and his children
