PREFACE.

An edition of the Indian Treaties, published in 1825, having been long since exhausted, and a new one being required, care has been taken to introduce such improvements as will render the present work equally valuable for reference and authority. The Treaties are arranged chronologically, instead of by tribes, and a reference to the index will not only direct the reader to the particular Treaty he may be in search of, but to any subject embraced in the whole range of our extensive Indian negotiations. Pains have been taken to render the work as accurate as possible, and especially to make the index sufficiently copious to embrace every matter stipulated in the several Treaties, either on behalf of the whites or the aborigines, and the various subjects are arranged in such a manner as to combine facility of reference with perspicuity of detail. The whole has been published under the immediate care and superintendence of C. A. Harris, Esq., the present able and active Commissioner of Indian Affairs-and to the interest he has taken in supervising the work, is it mainly indebted for whatever advantages it may be found to possess.

It was originally intended to have collated each Treaty with the original manuscript in the Department of State; but upon making the trial it was found that the differences were altogether unimportant, and were occasioned, principally, by the punctuation, which was generally incorrect. The copies as published, after ratification by the Senate, were therefore followed throughout the work.
