This FIFTH BOOK OF LESSONS has been compiled as a portion of the plan of progressive Lessons, partially developed in the preceding Books. Its object is to carry forward the Instruction of the more advanced Pupils, into subjects which had been but briefly noticed, or altogether omitted in the former Numbers of the Series. It was intended to introduce Lessons on several topics, which had not been touched, particularly a series of Lessons on certain of the Useful Arts; but some of those Lessons which have been introduced, having extended to an unexpected length, it has been deemed expedient to close the Number for the present, and to defer the consideration of the propriety of abridging some of the present Lessons and adding others, or of compiling a Sixth Number, till a New Edition shall be required. |
