landscape around, and the blue sea upon which imagination pictures the barks of the roving Phoenicians, to whom tradition assigns this structure-without a feeling of intense curiosity, and almost of awe, which perhaps no other description of edifice is, in an equal degree, calculated to call forth.-Bartlett's Overland Route.

THE BEST POLICE.

VERY recently, there rose up a band of marauders in the trading districts, gathering the idle and vicious as it advanced. It was an invasion. It insisted on the universal suspension of manufacture. Its plea was the injustice of existing wages. Save in one spot, and near where the tumult began, there was no depredation on property; in no instance was there violence on life, except in withstanding force. With this wild proceeding, this profligate interference, there was little sympathy. It was rightly judged and strongly condemned. "A poor man that oppresseth the poor, is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food." Like a torrent it died away. It is well known that this irruption gradually diminished in its progress through Yorkshire. An irregular sally might be expected to lose strength in proportion to the distance. But it never repaired the loss. The people felt that it was fatuous and self-destructive. They never breathed a wish as to it success. Leedsmarked out for ignorance and cruelty by none who know itwas the formidable pass most dreaded by this bandit-multitude. "We have nothing to hope for there," cried the leaders; "there are too many Sunday Schools!" R. W. Hamilton.

THE ART OF ATTENTION.

To the generality of persons, all sheep appear alike; but to the shepherd, who has minutely attended to and contrasted their various characteristics in form and feature, each member of the flock is as different and distinguishable from the rest, as one human being from another. Now the philosopher, we must remember, does no more than the shepherd; he merely, by close observation or attention to the individual qualities of

bodies, detects diversities among objects apparently identical, and discovers certain points of identity among others which seem to be totally different, and classifies and distinguishes those objects accordingly.

To what superficial observer would any identity present itself between the glittering and pellucid diamond that is the hardest of all known substances, and the dull black charcoal that we can crumble betwixt our fingers; and yet from a very minute attention to the action of this little gem upon the rays of light, and a comparison of this action with that of other carbonaceous substances, that profound observer, Sir Isaac Newton, was enabled to surmise its connexion with that class of bodies, many years before it was proved by contemplating it in connexion with intense heat, to be absolutely identical with them in constitution. Moreover, what difference, in the power of intelligence, does it require to perceive the constitutional identity of these two bodies, when they are found to be each resolvable into the same substance. All that is wanted even to discover it, is a difference in the time or intensity of the attention devoted to them.-Mayhew.

As a port is a place of rest to a ship; so is friendship to life. The reproof of a father is pleasant medicine; for it is more advantageous than severe chastisements.

MEMOIR OF MRS. ALFRED DIXEY.

MRS. ALFRED DIXEY, the subject of this memoir, was the daughter of the late Dr. Duncan, of Highgate. She was born in the year 1819, and was removed to her final and everlasting rest on Thursday, the 22nd April, 1852, leaving behind her a large circle of relatives and friends, who will long continue to entertain a grateful remembrance of her name and character.

Surrounded from infancy by pious influences, she began in early life to cherish a reverence and esteem for the things of God; but although she acknowledged the excellency of religion, and conscientiously avoided all worldly amusements, she made no

profession of attachment to Christ until within a few months of her marriage.

Providential circumstances occurring to deepen her former convictions, a sense of obligation to the Divine Redeemer led her, in the year 1842, to seek fellowship with the church at Union Chapel, under the pastoral care of the Rev. Thomas Lewis. From that time, to the close of her career, she sought to walk worthy of her high vocation. So long as circumstances permitted, she engaged in the work of Sabbath school instruction, visiting the poor, and distributing tracts from house to house. But, as the claims of her own home increased, she was compelled to relinquish these public efforts, for others of a more private and pressing character. Her dear children became the objects of her most anxious solicitude; and not only did she watch over them with all the tenderness and affection peculiar to a mother, but frequently and fervently did she intercede for them at a throne of grace. The Maternal Society* in connexion with Union Chapel, afforded her advantages which she highly appreciated, and gratefully acknowledged. Nothing could induce her to neglect the meetings of that association. They were always welcome to her and accounted amongst her highest privileges. And never did she seem more happy than when communicating to her husband the valuable hints and suggestions elicited upon these occasions. She would frequently dilate upon them, expressing at the same time her own anxious solicitude for the spiritual and eternal welfare of her offspring. And the efforts she put forth continually, proved how sincere were the wishes she was wont to express.

Being naturally of a retiring disposition, she appeared to shun - observation; at the same time she was remarkable for her ingenuousness and candor. Truthfulness was her most striking feature-the great characteristic by which she was distinguished. Whether it were a failing or not, she always spoke as she thought. She never feigned a friendship-she never made an insincere profession. She abhorred alike affectation and deceit: whatever she said was truthful-whatever she did was real. An incident which has come to light since her decease may illustrate not only the natural kindliness of her heart, but the sympathy she evinced

towards the suffering and distressed. Seeing a poor woman with several destitute children outside her door, apparently saturated with wet, and pining from hunger, she brought them inside her dwelling, and having supplied them with food, she gave to each some article of apparel, taking from one of her own little one the dress which he then wore, therewith to clothe the naked. Nor were her acts of kindness few or grudgingly bestowed. The last errand upon which she went was an errand of mercy; and the last visit she paid was to succour the afflicted and dying, and it was paid cheerfully, although her health would scarcely admit of its discharge.

Shortly after her illness commenced, she expressed the opinion that her sickess might be unto death. Her husband remarking that he had prayed, and would pray for her restoration, she replied, "But you must ask in submission to the will of God. Yes, that is how you must pray." Her danger increasing, enquiry was made as to the ground of her hope. She assured the enquirer that she was looking to Jesus, clinging to his cross, resting upon his atonement; and although she was conscious that she had honored him too little, she felt that she could lean upon his all-sufficiency, and confide in his grace; and prayed that God would preserve her in the same habit and posture of mind. From that moment her faith seemed to gain vigor, and her assurance to acquire strength. Her hope grew brighter and brighter, and as she neared the celestial city, she seemed as it were to behold its glory, and to rejoice in its light. Being assured amidst her sufferings that God would uphold, and sustain her through the conflict, she repeated with great emphasis that beautiful passage in Isaiah, "I will strengthen thee, yea I will help thee, yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousnesss."

The work of Christ being referred to as the sole and exclusive ground of the sinner's hope, she repeated the well-known words"Nothing in my hand I bring,

Simply to Thy Cross I cling!

And again, reference being made to the continued efficacy of the Redeemer's work, and the value of his precious blood, she said— "The dying thief rejoiced to see,

That fountain in his day,

And there may I, though vile as he,

Wash all my guilt away."

At another time, with loud and exulting voice, she exclaimed, "Now unto him that hath loved us, and washed us from our sins in his blood, be glory and dominion for ever!"

The very mention of the Redeemer's name seemed to fill her with transporting joy. "Is He not faithful?" it was asked. "Oh, yes," she replied, "He is faithful unto death." Such, indeed, was her confidence in Christ, that at one time, having dilated upon her hopes, she enquired, "Is it presumption?" But being assured that thus to trust in Christ, was really to honor him, she continued in the same strain, "giving glory to God."

As the hour of her departure drew near, she remarked, "I coul not die alone, but Jesus is with me. Oh, what visions is he causing to pass before me! I shall soon be with him—

"There shall I see his face,

And never, never sin,

There from the rivers of his grace,

Drink endless pleasures in.'"

Her medical attendant coming in, she enquired if she were not really dying, and upon being answered in the affirmative, she intimated her approval. Shortly after, having commended her children, one by one, to the care and protection of her Heavenly Father, she took an affectionate farewell of all gathered around her bedside. She besought the servant to make her soul the great object of concern, and raising her voice, she said, " And I charge you if you have any influence upon my children, when I am gone, that you exert it for their everlasting good."

Upon being asked if she had any message to her brothers, she replied, "Oh, yes! tell them to think of their souls! to seek salvation now, and defer it not to a dying bed: that is not the time!”

Then expressing her desire to be gone to her Heavenly Father's house above, her husband remarked, "My dear, it is hard to part." "Dearest husband,” she rejoined, “my Father has sent for me. He desires that I should go to him; and can I refuse? "

Clasping her hands, she closed her eyes with the words of Stephen upon her lips, "Lord Jesus receive my spirit!" But presently, with a look of disappointment, she said, "I thought ere this that I should have been landed in heaven. O, my Father! my Father! why so long?" Thus she continued longing for death. And she met it not as a foe, but as a friend-she was willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
