The question on agreeing to the amendments being taken, they were received.

Mr. M'Donell moved further to amend the bill, by adding thereto the following, to stand as the second section :

"That the jurisdiction of a Justice of the Peace, in all civil cases, shall be hereafter limited to the township in which such Justice shall reside, at the time when appointed, excepting in the cases hereinafter mentioned, that is to say: issuing subpoenas, administering oaths, taking acknowledgments of deeds, or other instruments of writing, celebrating marriage, and sitting in cases of forcible entries and detainer; in which cases the jurisdiction of a Justice shall be co-extensive with the county."

Mr. M'Donell moved to amend the amendment, by striking out in the 1st line, the word "hereafter”, and inserting, after the word "cases," in the 3d line, the words, "from and after the first day of July next."

The question, on agreeing to the amendment to the amendment, being taken, it was determined in the negative.

Mr. Dr ke moved to amend the bill, by adding the following, te stand as the second section thereof:

"That ao person having a family, resident in any township in this Territory, shall be prosecuted by summons in any civil action before any Justice of the Peace, out of the township where suck person may reside."

The question being taken, the amendment was rejected.

"SEC. 2. That so much of the aforesaid recited act as requires Justices of the Peace within this Territory, to give security previous to executing the duties of their respective offices, be and the same is hereby repealed, so far as relates to the county of Chippe

Wa.

Mr. M'Donell, from the committee on Territorial Affairs, reorted,

A bill concerning County seats.

Mr. Fletcher, from the Judiciary committee, reported,

A bill to authorise Sarah Aun Steers to sell and convey certain lands therein mentioned.

Said bills were read the first time and ordered to lie on the table, The bill to incorporate the Stockholders of the Lake Superior Mining and Trading Company, was read a second time, and the Council proceeded to consider the bill as in cominittee of the whole; when,

A message was received from the Governor by Mr. Trowbridge, notifying the Council, that the Governor had, on the 15th inst. approved and signed,

An act to amend an act, entitled an act to provide for the publication of the Acts passed by the Legislative Council of the Territory of Michigan.

And on this day, had approved and signed,

An act in relation to non-resident highway taxes.

An act relative to nine-pin alleys; and,

An act declaring the Roads established by the government of the United States, within the Territory of Michigan, public highways, and for other purposes.

The Council having resumed the consideration of the bill to încorporate the Stockholders of the Lake Superior Mining and Tra ding Company;

On motion of Mr. Schoolcraft, the bill was amended, by striking out in the 5th section thereof, the words, "Robert Stuart, John Hulburt. Francis Audrian, and Henry B. Hoffman, be and they are hereby appointed ;" and substituting these words" the Go vernor nominate, and by and with the advice and consent of the Council, appoint three."

The bill having been reported as amended, the question on

The "bill to provide for the inspection of Flour, Beef, Pork and Fish, was, on motion, read a second time by its title, and considered as in committee of the whole.

On motion of air. Le Roy, the bill was recommitted to the com mittee on Territorial Affairs.

The bill to legalise the proceedings of officers within the county of Iowa, and for other purposes, was read a second time and considered as in committee of the whole.

On motion of Mr. Irwin, the bill was amended, by inserting in the 5th line of the 1st section, after the word "county," the words,

or previous or preliminary thereto;" and in the 1st line of the 3d section, after the word "oath;" the words, " or failure to give se curity for the performance of any duty"

The bill having been reported as amended, the amendments were concurred in.

the bill to amend an act, entitled an act to prevent forcible entries and detainers, was read a second time; and,

On motion of Mr. Fletcher,
