reported, and asked and obtained leave to bring in a bill entitled "An act to authorise the commissioners of highways of the town of Ridgeway, in the county of Orleans, to resurvey part of a certain State road in said town,," which was read the first time, an:l by unanimous consent was also read the second time, and committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Littlejohn, from the committee on canals, reported the bill entitled "An act to provide for the improvement of the Erie, Oswego, and Cayuga and Seneca canals," which was read the first time, and by unanimous consent was also read a second time, and committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Thorn, from the committee on colleges, academies and common schools, to which was referred the bill entitled "An act to amend an act in relation to free schools in the city of Troy, and school district No. 10 in the town of Lansingburgh, passed July 10, 1851; also to amend the act providing for the establishment of free schools in the city of Troy, passed April 4, 1849," reported that the committee had examined said bill, made sundry amendments thereto, and saw no reason why the same, as amended, should not be passed into a law.

Ordered, That said bill be committed to the committee of the whole.

By unanimous consent,

Mr. Bergen asked and obtained leave to introduce a bill entitled "An act for the relief of the Williamsburgh Dispensary," which was read the first time, and by unanimous consent was also read the second time, and referred to the committee on charitable and religions societies.

Mr. D. P. Wood offered, for the consideration of the House, a resolution in the words following, to wit:

Resolved, That the committee on privileges and elections be authorised to send for papers and persons in the matter of the contested seat in the second Assembly district in Jefferson county, and that said committee make their final report on said case within one week from the adoption of this resolution.

Mr. Conkling, from the committee on insurance companies, to was referred the bill entitled "An act to amend the charter of the Globe Insurance Company," reported that the committee had ex⚫ amined said bill, made sundry amendments thereto, and saw no reason why the same, as amended, should not be passed into a law.

Ordered, That said bill be committed to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Speaker presented the annual report of the Seamen's Bank for savings, in the city of New-York.

Mr. Speaker presented the annual report of the Mariners' Savings Institution, in the city of New-York.

Mr. Speaker presented a communication from the State Engineer and Surveyor, in answer to a resolution of the Assembly of Jan. 13, 1854, calling for information in regard to the quantity of land owned by the State.

The bill entitled "An act to incorporate the Sixpenny Savings Bank in the city of Rochester," was taken up for its third reading.

Mr. Speaker stated the pending question to be on the motion of Mr. Randall to recommit the bill to the committee on banks, with instructions to report a general bill, which motion was pending at the hour of adjournment at the evening session of January 25.

Mr. D. P. Wood moved to amend said motion to recommit, by striking out the proposed instructions and inserting in their stead, instructions to report the following amendments: strike out the words "as such," in section six; strike out the provision authorising investments in city stocks.

Mr. Angle moved to recommit said bill to the committee of the whole, with instructions to report amendments,as follows: strike out the words " as such," in the first line of the third section, by substituting "eleven" in the place of the word "six," in the fourth line of the fourth section; the word "nine" in place of the word "five," in the sixth line of the same section; also, by substituting the word "nine" in place of the word "six," in the fourth line of the fifth section; and at the end of the fifth section, add the following words: "but no person elected as trustee shall be allowed to act as such until his election shall have been approved by the Supreme Court at a term held in the county of Munroe;" also strike out the words "or in the stock or bonds of any city authorised to be issued by the Legislature of this State," from the 5th, 6th and 7th lines of the 6th section; also, to increase the number of trustees to 21; also strike out the words "from their number" from the 2d line of section 4.

Mr. Speaker put the question whether the House would agree to the motion of Mr. Angle to recommit to the committee of the whole, and it was determined in the affirmative.

The Senate bill entitled "An act in relation to toll gates on the Fredonia and Sinclairville plank road," was read a third time. Mr. Speaker put the question whether the House would agree to the final passage of said bill, and it was determined in the affirmative, a majority of all the members elected to the Assembly voting in favor thereof, as follows:
