we study them, the more useful we shall find them.

People often make themselves miserable by looking into the future, and wondering what it will bring. Their present surroundings are sad enough, and they think that the future will only bring them greater cares and sorrows. But we should not do this. God has not taught us to pray for the future, as far as this life is concerned, or to be anxious about to-morrow. He would have us "take short views of life," asking day by day for our daily bread, that is for all we need, whether for our souls or bodies.

He loves us, He cares for us, He has promised to supply all our needs, and when we find He watches over us to-day, can we not trust Him also to watch over and provide for us to-morrow?

I once knew a person in great trouble, who told me her greatest help during the dark hours of trial, had been to find out, and repeat to herself all the texts and verses which teach us to live from day to day trusting in God's strength, and not looking into the future.

"Day by day, we magnify Thee."

'Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin."

"Give us this day our daily bread." "As thy days, so shall thy strength be."

"One by one thy duties wait thee
Let thy whole strength go to each,
Let no future dreams elate thee,
Learn thou first what these can teach.

One by one thy griefs shall meet thee,
Do not fear an armèd band:
One will fade as others greet thee;
Shadows passing through the land.

Do not look at life's long sorrow;
See how short each moment's pain,
God will help thee for to-morrow,
So each day begin again.”—A. Proctor.

We cannot tell what a day may bring forth. We may fear and dread what is coming, but suddenly something may happen which will turn. our heaviness into joy. What we have feared so much may perhaps never come to pass, or if it does, God will come with it, and strengthen

us to bear it.

art with me."

"I will fear no evil, for Thou If we take God for our friend,

if we make Him our companion, then whatever comes will not hurt us. Be it joy or sorrow, sickness or health, poverty or riches, He sends it, and He will make all things work together for our good.

We shall then be able to say, in the beautiful words of a living Poet,

"Be it good or ill,

Be it what you will,

It needs must help me on my road,
My narrow way to Heaven, please God."

Trust in God day by day.

C. Rossetti.

Pray to God day by day. Tell Him all your needs, your cares, your sorrows, day by day, and He will bear the burden for you. Above all, thank Him day by day.

Very few people are as thankful as they ought to be. They are resigned, and patient, and brave, and sometimes hopeful, but they are not thankful.

We must try to get into the habit of looking out for all the bright, kindly, pleasant

things that our loving Father sends us day by day, to help us on our way.

It may be a beautiful day of glorious sunshine. It may be a kind letter, or a pleasant visit from a friend. It may be a bright smile, or a kindly deed, or a gentle word.

You may say these are small things, but they are not. They are part of the " daily bread" given by God to cheer and encourage His children, when the way seems long, and our hearts feel faint and weary. It is wonderful how many things, small and great, God sends to help us, and to cheer us day by day, if only we will look out for them, and accept them gratefully from His hand.

We must go on bravely, and trustfully, and cheerfully, day by day, remembering the noble words written by one who has taught us this lesson.

"We must love the Lord our God with all our heart, and soul, and strength, and our neighbours as ourselves.

"We must lead good, beautiful lives, fighting manfully against all the giants of evil and poverty, and crime that we may meet. We must keep hearts full of pure, tender

thoughts, and speak brave, honest, truthful words. We must believe with all our hearts whatever grief or trouble may come to us, that life is a good thing, a great gift from God; that the earth is beautiful, and full of gladness as well as of sorrow; that though sin has dimmed its beauty, and marred its peace, yet it is our dear home, a noble battle ground where we may fight a good fight, and where through Christ Who has loved us, we may be more than conquerors. We must remember how for many past ages, valiant warriors, diligent workers, and all the dear Saints, and the noble army of Martyrs, have fought that fight before us.

"And then, when our battles are over, there will be rest for all, and we may all enter into the glorified new life that Christ has won for us, to go out no more for ever."

Lord, for to-morrow and its needs

I do not pray:

Keep me, my God, from stain of sin
Just for To-Day.
