[Press release of Monday, Mar. 14, 1977]

CHAIRMAN CHARLES A. VANIK (D., OHIO), SUBCOMMITTEE ON TRADE, COMMITTEE ON WAYS AND MEANS, U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, ANNOUNCES TWO DAY HEARING ON March 24 and 25, 1977, BEGINNING AT 10:00 A.M. ON THE AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS FOR AND ON OVERSIGHT OF THE U.S. INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMISSION AND ON COMPARABILITY OF TRADE AND PRODUCTION STATISTICS

The Honorable Charles A. Vanik (D., Ohio), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Trade of the Committee on Way and Means, U.S. House of Representatives, today announced further details of a previously announced public hearing that the Subcommittee on Trade will conduct on Thursday and Friday, March 24 and 25, 1977, on the authorization of appropriations for and on oversight of the United States International Trade Commission. The Subcommittee will also receive testimony on the requirements of section 608 of the Trade Act of 1974 concerning the comparability among statistics on imports, exports, and domestic production, and the development of an improved international classification of articles for trade and customs purposes.

The hearing on both days will be held in the Main Hearing Room of the Committee on Ways and Means, Longworth House Office Building, beginning at 10:00 A.M.

In announcing this hearing, Chairman Vanik noted that section 175 of the Trade Act of 1974 established independent budget procedures and separate authorization of appropriations for the U.S. International Trade Commission, which places its budget and expenditures directly under the control of the Congress.

Chairman Vanik further noted that the Trade Act of 1974 placed increased responsibilities on the U.S. International Trade Commission and that this hearing will provide the Subcommittee on Trade with the opportunity to review the manner in which the Commission is carrying out its responsibilities. It should be noted, however, that no testimony will be received on the merits of specific cases considered or being considered by the ITC.
