Journal of yesterday read and approved.

On motion of Senator Akin,

The Senate proceeded to the election of a Journal Clerk, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Mr. Smith.

Senator Jones nominated M. R. Dutton, of Jefferson county. The question being upon the election of Journal Clerk, the roll was called, the following Senators voting for M. R. Dutton :

So Mr. M. R. Dutton was declared elected Journal Clerk.
On motion of Senator Akin,

Mr. Dutton was sworn into office.

Senator Jones presented the petition of S. A. Coffman and 58 others, praying that Kaw township, in Jefferson county, be released from the operations of an act entitled "An act for the regulation of the running at large of swine."

Referred to the Committee on Agriculture.

Senrtor Drenning presented a petition of John Grable and others, asking for female suffrage.

Referred to a special committee of three, consisting of Senators Drenning, Miller and Legate, to examine, and report by bill or otherwise.

Senator Manning offered the petition of Samuel Shackley and

others, for an act to prevent Indians from hunting or trapping on lands not held by them in reserve from the General Government. Referred to the Committee on Public Lands.

Senator Legate offered a petition of Wm. Cheerlfour and 28 others, asking aid to the Scandinavian Society for certain purposes. Referred to the Committee on Appropriations.

Senator Anderson offered the petition of J. H. Pratt and others, asking for the relinquishment of certain taxes.

Referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

Senator Legate offered a petition of J. B. Davis and others, for a law to allow a salary to the assessor of Leavenworth county. Referred to the Committee on Counties and Towns. Senator Eskridge, chairman of Special Committee on Railroads, made the following report:

MR. PRESIDENT-Your committee have had under consideration Senate concurrent resolution No. 4, relating to the proposed Southern Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad, and instruct me to report the same back with the following additional resolution as an amendment, and recommend their passage:

Resolved, That the Secretary of State be, and is hereby, requested to forward a certified copy of these resolutions to the President of the United States, to the President of the Senate, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, and to each of our Senators and Representative in Congress.

Senate concurrent resolution No. 4, relating to the proposed Southern Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad, as amended by special committee, was taken up for consideration.

Further proceedings under the call were dispensed with. Senate joint resolution No. 5 was taken up for consideration. On motion of Senator Grover,

The Senate went into Committee of the Whole for the consideration of Senate joint resolutions Nos. 4 and 5.

After some time spent therein, the committee rose and through their chairman reported that they have had under, consideration Senate joint resolution No. 5, to amend section one, of article eight, of the constitution, and recommend its passage as amended. Also, Senate joint resolution No. 4, to amend section one, of article five, of the constitution, and recommend its passage.

The report of the committee received, by consent.. Senate joint resolution No. 4 was taken up for consideration. Senator Weer moved to strike out the word "male," before the word "person," and insert the words "not married women," in section one of the joint resolution, upon which
