In behalf of Children.

O LORD, in whose hands are all hearts, and who canst dispose and turn as it seemeth best unto thy heavenly wisdom; dispose the hearts of our dear children toward the attainment of everlasting life. Sow in their hearts the seed of eternal life. Defend them from the snares to which they are exposed by reason of their tender age. Teach them to remember thee in the days of their youth: may they give their hearts unto thee. Give them grace to receive instruction. Write thy laws upon their hearts, that they may not depart from thee. Enable them in their early days to begin to witness a good confession; and may thy love, shed abroad in their hearts, grow with their growth, and strengthen with their strength. Guide and teach them, by thy Holy Spirit, day by day. And grant, that having done thy will, and approved themselves thy servants

in this life, they may be found amongst the redeemed in thy kingdom of glory. We ask this, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

For a Forgiving Spirit.

O MOST merciful Lord, who dost not keep thine anger for ever; but forgivest iniquity, transgression, and sin; Look down on thine unworthy servant: In many things I offend, and that continually: If thou wert extreme to mark what I do amiss, I could not answer thee one charge of a thousand. As thou freely forgivest my many and grievous sins, for thy dear Son's sake; suffer me not to cherish an unforgiving spirit towards those who may injure me. May I, from my heart, be ready to forgive all who may have done me wrong. And in everything may I be enabled to follow the example of my Saviour, and be made more likeminded unto him, day by day; for the Lord Jesus' sake. Amen.

To be used by a Person under Temptation. ALMIGHTY Saviour, who knowest how to succour the tempted, in that thou hast suffered, being tempted; and who dost, with the temptation, make a way to escape, for those who put their trust in thee: Look down in pity on thine unworthy servant, who is sorely pressed with temptations. I am oppressed; O Lord, undertake for me. Without thee I am helpless : Help me, O Lord, and let not the enemy triumph over me. Deliver my feet from the snares he has laid for me: Set me at liberty, that I may walk in the path of thy commandments. For thy mercy and truth's sake; for the sake of those around me; for thine own glory's sake, suffer me not to give place to the devil. Enable me to resist him successfully, and to triumph over every temptation. O Lord, send help to thy servant; that I may be

delivered, and glorify thee, both now and

for ever.

Amen.

After having fallen into Sin.

O MERCIFUL Lord, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity: I have sinned; I have sinned grievously against thee. O take not vengeance of my sin; but spare me, for thy mercies' sake in Christ Jesus. I acknowledge my transgression; I am grieved and wearied with the burden of my sin. O let the blood of Christ speak peace to my guilty conscience: forgive mine iniquity, for it is great. And, for Christ's sake, grant that the thoughts of my heart may be cleansed by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that I may serve thee henceforth in newness of life. Give me grace that I may hate and forsake my besetting sins. Cleanse me, O Lord, for I am vile: O Lord, I am weak, help me: I am prone to evil; hold

thou me up, that my footsteps slip not. Hear, O Lord, from heaven, and forgive; for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

In prospect of Trial.

O LORD, who orderest all things in heaven and earth, without thy permission no evil can befal us: Mercifully turn away from us, if it be thy gracious will, the evils which we apprehend; or if in thine inscrutable wisdom thou seest fit to afflict us, suffer us not to be tried above what we are able to bear. Grant that our hearts may be stayed on thee. Permit not our faith to fail; but let us be strong in faith, giving glory to thee. And may thy chastening hand teach us more of thy love, wean us more from this world, and bring us nearer to thee; and make us, by thy Spirit's teaching, more meet for the inheritance of the saints in light. We ask it for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
