FRIDAY MORNING.

THE DAY OF THE CREATION OF MAN, AND THE

BEASTS, AND CATTLE, AND EVERY CREEPING

THING, AND OF THE SACRIFICE OF OUR LORD
UPON THE CROSS.

A LITANY FOR THE PARDON OF SINS COMMITTED THROUGH THE BODY, AND FOR THE

SANCTIFICATION OF ITS MEMBERS.

M. O Thou, whose Hands for our sakes were pierced with sharp nails, Whatsoever evil we have by our hands committed, whatsoever good we have left unwrought.

A. Forgive us, good Lord.

M. O Thou, whose Feet for our sakes were fastened to the accursed tree, forgive us the swiftness of our feet to evil, and their slowness on the errands of love and mercy.

A. Forgive us, good Lord.

M. O Thou, whose Side for our sakes was pierced with a spear, Forgive us our wandering desires, our vain imaginations, and all the evil thoughts to which our hearts give birth.

A. Forgive us, good Lord.

M. O Thou, who didst bear our sins in thine own Body on the Tree, Forgive us that we have yielded our bodies instruments of unrighteousness unto sin, and grant us grace to present them a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is our reasonable service.

A. O Christ, hear us.

M. Give us grace henceforth to mortify the lust of the eyes,-to seek out of the Book of the Lord and read, and to seek out and have pleasure in thy works also.

A. O Christ, hear us.

M. Grant that we may work with our hands the thing that is good, that we may have to give to him that needeth.

[blocks in formation]

M. Give us grace to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to set forth with our feet the errands of love and mercy.

A. O Christ, hear us.

M. Grant that no corrupt communication may proceed out of our mouths; but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearers.

A. O Christ, hear us.

Blessed be Thou, O Lord our God and Saviour, for the holy and bitter sufferings of this day! O grant that what Thou wast then content to endure for us men and for our salvation, may be effectual for the saving of our souls. O Thou, who didst vouchsafe to taste death for the sins of every man, mortify in us our members which are upon the earth, even all things contrary to Thy holy will, that we may also be crucified unto the world; and save us, O blessed Jesus, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

OUR

The Lord's Prayer.

UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Benediction.

THE very God of Peace sanctify you wholly,

and may your whole spirit, and soul, and body, be preserved blameless, unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Confession.

LORD God, we confess that we have often dis

honoured Thy Holy Church, into which Thou hast received us at our Baptism; And though we have confessed Thee with our tongues, we have denied Thee oftentimes by our actions. We confess, Lord, that our eyes have been often open to let sin in; That our ears have been often ready to receive sinful discourses; That we have often let loose our tongues; That we have yielded our members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin; That we have defiled our hearts by vain and foul imaginations; That we have wasted our time and our talents; That we have not lived answerably to our means of grace; That we have been cold in devotion, soon weary of prayer, dull and heavy in the way to Heaven, but quick and active in the ways of sin. Accept our confession, O Lord, and make our repentance sincere, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or the following,

W

E sinners come before Thee, O Lord, not trusting in our merits, but in Thy great mercy and goodness. O Lord, we tremble and fear before

Thee; for our souls and bodies are stained by many sins. Yet, O Holy Lord God, of terrible majesty, in our misery and trouble, to Thee we turn, the fountain of mercy; to Thee we fly for healing. Unto Thee, whom we cannot endure as a Judge, our soul crieth as a Saviour. To Thee, O Lord, we show our wounds, to Thee we open our shame. We know that our sins are great and manifold, for which we are afraid. But our hope is in Thy mercies, which cannot be numbered. Look upon us with the eyes of Thy mercy, O Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. O King Eternal, God and Man, Crucified for men, hear us, hoping in Thee. Pity us, full of misery and sin, Thou that art the Fountain of Pity. Save us, O life-giving Sacrifice, offered for us on the Cross. Save us by Thy precious Blood, which washeth away the sins of the world. Remember, Lord, Thy creatures, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy Blood. It grieveth us that we have sinned against Thee. Take away from us, most merciful Father, all our sins and iniquities. Purge us from them perfectly; and defend us, now and evermore, by Thine Almighty power, from all the enemies of our souls and bodies, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD, we beseech Thee, mercifully hear our prayers, and spare all those who confess their
