LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY, TRANSMITTING A statement of salaries and other expenses of American ministers, chargés, &c., at foreign courts. MARCH 2, 1854.-Ordered to be printed. TREASURY DEPARTMENT, March 1, 1854. SIR: In compliance with the resolution of the House of Representatives of the 13th ultimo, "requesting the Secretary of the Treasury to report to this House the names of all persons who, since the fourth of March, A. D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty-three, have drawn from the treasury of the United States any compensation, either as outfit or salary, for services as ministers plenipotentiary, chargés d'affaires, or secretaries of legation at foreign courts; specifying particularly the amount paid to each, respectively; the date of the payment thereof; and the duration of their residence at the courts to which they were commissioned," I have the honor to transmit, herewith, a letter of the Fifth Auditor of the Treasury, accompanied by a statement prepared by him, containing so much of the information required by the resolution as his office affords. The particular in which the statement does not fully give the information required, is in the time of service of some of the officers mentioned. The Auditor reports that this information is given as far as it is to be found on the files of his office, and I have to add that there is no other or further information upon the subject in any other branch of this department.
