237. Mev, properly, is an affirmative particle, and may be translated, indeed, certainly, truly. It is commonly placed in the be

ginning of a sentence, and is followed with dɛ in a subsequent clause, to mark oppofition or diverfity, and particularly, the distribution of things into parts. Heb.x. 33. Tero pev, Partly whilst ye were made a gazing-flock*.

238. Mev, in the beginning of a fentence, when not followed with de, is used as a simple conjunction, and may be tranflated now, and. Acts i. 1. Tov μey пgwтоvλoyov, Now the former treatise.— Rom. i. 8. Пgwтov μev, And first I thank my God.-Rom. xi. 13. Εφ' όσον μεν ειμι εγω εθνών αποτολ, την διακονίαν με δοξάζω, And Ep'orov in as much as I am the apoftie of the Gentiles, I do honour to my miniftry, namely, by declaring to the Gentiles their title to be re

247. Ma is properly a negative particle, fignifying not. But it is often used as an interrogation, especially when followed with 8 or 8x. In one paffage, our tranflators understood it as a negative interrogation, though the negative particle is omitted. John iv. 29. MAT &TOG, Is not this the Chrift*.-It hath the fame meaning, perhaps, in the following paffages. Rom. iii. 3. Mn, Will not their unbelief deftroy the faithfulness of God?-Ver. 5. Mn, Is not God who inflicteth wrath, unrighteous ?—Rom. ix. 14. Mn, Is not unrighteousness with God? Yet I have not ventured to tranflate My in that manner. See, however, Rom. 3. note.

248. Mn joined with us or more, hath an affirmative fignification. Luke iii. 15. 249. Na, is used not only in affirmations, but in expressing one's ifbes fo may be tranflated, I befeech, 1 pray. Mark. vii. 28. Ναι Nai nugis, I beseech thee, Lord, for even the dogs eat of the crumbs. If va is taken in this fenfe affirmatively, it must be tranflated, True, Lord, but, &c.-Philem. ver. 20. Nai, adeλçe, eyw σ8 ovaijany, befeech thee, brother, let me have joy of thee.

This, which is the common tranflation, reprefents God's hatred as the cause of the wickedness of the Ifraelites in Gilgal, contrary to the true sense of the paffage, which ought to be thus translated, All their wickedness is in Gilgal, (órı) therefore I hated them there.-Luke vii. 47. Her fins which are many are forgiven, (OT) therefore he hath loved me (fee ver. 42.) much; but to whom little is forgiven, the fame loveth me little.-2 Cor. vii. 8. 260. Or, is sometimes used as a particle of affirmation. So Stephen in his Concord. tells us. Hec particula (¿rı) non redundare, fed confirmandi vim habere videtur. And in this the Greek grammarians and Beza agree with Stephen; particularly Beza, who, in the following paffage, tranflates ri, certè. 1 John iii. 20. Or pawv, Certainly God is greater than our heart, &c.-Matt. vii. 23. Then will I profefs unto them, (oTI DETOTE Eyv) furely I never knew you.--John vii. 12. There was much murmuring among the people concerning him : fome indeed faid, (ôtı) Certainly he is a good man.- Rom. iii. 8.
