TO MY MOTHER

WITH LOVE AND GRATITUDE

I DEDICATE THIS BOOK

Green, Walford Davis. William Pitt, Earl of Chatham and the growth and division of the British empire, 1708-1778 (Heroes of the nations, v. 32.)

N. Y. Putnam 1901.

13+391 p. portraits, plates, map, D. $1.50

A good compendious biography of the public career of Chatham, from manuscript and other sources, by the author of "George Canning's political career", 1891. The essay on Chatham by Macaulay remains still the most spirited sketch of his life; the voluminous life by Francis Thackeray, 1827, 2v., the collection of anecdotes by John Almon, 1792, 4V., the Chatham correspondence, 1838-40, 4v., and the monography by A. von Ruville, "William Pitt und Graf Bute", Berlin, 1895 must also be noted.

Eng. Hist. R. 16:821; Ath. 1901, 2:251.
