2. Question. Area of public lands in and by each State, open for homesteading, classified in accordance with the type or kind of homestead entry that may be made therefor.

Answer. The area of public land in and by each State open for homesteading, classified in accordance with the type or kind of homestead entry that may be made therefor, is indicated by the attached table entitled "Summary of outstanding water resources and agricultural withdrawals and classifications," which was obtained from the Geological Survey. The figures furnished by the survey show in some instances a greater acreage than is involved in the vacant public land. In classifying the public domain the Geological Survey proceeds by compact areas of like character. The excess of designated areas over the total vacant land area is also very materially accounted for by the facts (1) that under the enlarged and stock-raising homestead acts it is necessary to designate patented and entered land as well as vacant land and (2) that large areas are designated under both acts. The area of vacant public land is constantly changing, through filings, rejections, cancellations, and restorations. If the classification were confined to what appeared to be vacant land only, the survey

would have to proceed in a checkerboard fashion in some instances, which would not be practicable. GENERAL LAND OFFICE,

Memorandum.

May 9, 1925.

In response to your informal request of May 8, 1925, I submit herewith certain tables and publications for the use of Commissioner Spry in his reply to the letter addressed to him on May 6, 1925, by Senator Cameron:

The table marked "Table A" is a summary of outstanding water resources and agricultural withdrawals and classifications as of December 31, 1924, and the table marked "Table B" is a summary of outstanding mineral withdrawals and classifications as of the same date.

You will note that "Table A" shows the areas by States designated (classified) under the stock-raising and enlarged homestead laws as subject to entry under the respective laws, and you will also note that "Table B" shows the areas withdrawn and classified by States as coal, oil, oil shale, and phosphate, and the areas withdrawn for potash.

The forty-first to forty-fifth, inclusive, annual reports of the Director of the Geological Survey to the Secretary of the Interior, for the fiscal years ended June 30, 1920, to June 30, 1924, are submitted with observation that detailed information relating to withdrawals, classifications, etc., will be found therein. For the forty-first annual report particular attention is invited to pages 145 to 160, inclusive; for the forty-second, to pages 88 to 97, inclusive; for the fortythird, pages 66 to 73, inclusive; for the forty-fourth, to pages 74 to 81, inclusive, and for the forty-fifth, to pages 69 to 76, inclusive.
