Leases negotiated with allottees sub- IRRIGATION (h) On Indian reservations that have been allotted where irrigation projects are in operation, in pursuance of the acts of August 1, 1914 (38 Stat. 583), and February 14, 1920 (41 Stat. 408), irrigation charges are assessed on a per acre basis against the lands benefited. The construction charge, which is the charge assessed for the construction of the project, is payable in 20 annual installments. The operation and maintenance assessments which are based on the cost of operating the project for a particular season, are fixed annually on a per acre basis against the lands benefited. Complete data regarding irrigation on Indian reservations in the States named in paragraph (2) is furnished along with other information for those particular States. TIMBER All proposed sales of timber on Indian reservations of a stumpage value greater than $100 are publicly advertised to invite competive bids, sales being awarded to highest bidders. (Sec. 8, act of Congress of June 25, 1910, 36 Stat. L. 855-857.) Sales in which the stumpage value of timber does not exceed $50,000 may be made from unallotted lands by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Sales in which the stumpage value exceeds $50,000 are made only with the express approval of the Secretary of the Interior. Bonds and advance cash deposits to protect the Indians' interests are required before any cutting of timber is permitted. Foresters of experience are employed to handle timber sales and the general administration of Indian forests in accordance with the best known forestry practice. |
