Maker of all! to thee we pray
Ere darkness close the waning day;
We pray thy mercy, kindness, might,
For help and safety through the night.

Our hours of rest from dreams be free,
And every wayward phantasy.
Restrain our foe; nor suffer sin
To stain our body slumbering.

Kind Father hear our prayer, and Thou,
His equal, hear it and bestow.

And thou, the Holy Ghost, shed down
Like grace from God the eternal One.

Mother of our Saviour! thou whose prayers may open heaven!

Port of Safety! Guiding Star! oh be thy succour given;

Raising up repentant hearts which groan their vices under.

Thou who didst thy maker bear, while nature gazed in wonder,

Virgin pure before and after Gabriel did hail thee,

Take a sinner's homage; list the prayers that now assail thee.

V. The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.

R. And she conceived of the Holy Ghost.

Pour thy grace into our souls we beseech thee

oh Lord; that we who have known the incarnation of Christ thy Son by the message of an angel, may, by his passion and cross, be brought to the glory of his resurrection. Through, &c. AVE REGINA CELORUM, FROM THE PURIFICATION TILL MAUNDY THURSDAY.

Hail thou mighty Queen of heaven!
Hail thou Queen to angels given!

Grace and glory long have crown'd thee.
Brightest brightest Maid, we greet thee!
Pray Christ hear us, we entreat thee!

V. Vouchsafe, oh sacred Virgin, to accept my praises.

R. Give me strength against thy enemies.

Hail Queen, we hail thee!

Let not mercy fail thee.

Life and hope and gladness! our prayers shall assail thee.

From thee, Eve's exiled children, comfort we borrow.

To thee, are we sighing

And groaning and crying

In this lowly vale of sorrow.

Turn then, thou our advocate, those pitying eyes upon us,

And let thy cheering glances beam their solace

on us.

And after this our exile, let us see for ever

Christ thy blessed Son, and part from him never. Oh clement,

Oh pious,

Oh blessed Virgin Mary.

V. Pray for us, oh holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
